Jay hadn't always been this greedy. He used to actually be a very kind person. But kindness wasn't always repaid.
As a child, he lived in a very abusive home. His father was a carpenter, his mother a whore. He was forced to work to help support himself while his brother and parents lived the high life. He once didn't need worldly possessions, but now he couldn't get enough of them.
He hated the thought of his family and he didn't want to ever go back to that horrible village.
He couldn't do anything to his family because he was just a boy when he had left. He had taken on an apprenticeship with a mage he met in a town about a year after he left. He finished training about fifteen years later.
After his apprenticeship, he started wandering as a merchant, cheating everyone out of their hard-earned money. He did this for a few months trying to figure out what to do next. Whatever it was it had to deal with gold or he wouldn't have it.
All throughout his training he had started to develop a love for gold. The items he acquired during his trip got him lots of gold. He didn't care how but he would get the gold from any traveler.
As he was traveling one day he saw a girl walking down the same path as him. He was determined to take all her gold, but she seemed different than any other traveler that he had seen.
Jay ran to catch up with her. Right away she had a very deadly atmosphere around her. But he still didn't give up.
After about five minutes of walking, she attacked. He, of course, being in this situation before, blocked her sword with his dagger. No one had ever attacked him this soon after meeting him.
They dueled for about three minutes before he saw her begin to cast a spell. This spell was different. Before she could finish he had to stop her. He remembered a chant his old mentor taught him. He quickly cast it. The young lady cursed him as she fell unconscious. He quickly picked her up and brought her to a nearby cave.
It was turning nightfall so he started a fire. As he was thinking about gold he remembered the spell and he looked over at the sleeping girl. She definitely wasn't human. The spell she was about to cast seemed familiar.
As he was thinking, he suddenly remembered a book which he had gotten from his master. He quickly got the book out and searched through the old pages. His face went pale as he read. That particular spell was supposedly inherited along with the sin of Wrath. Jay had unknowingly knocked out the sin of Wrath.
He thought more about this subject and he remembered the girl. He now knew her identity, and he had to do something because she would surely kill him, but he also didn't want to have to kill her otherwise it would ruin everything. He decided to tie her up so she couldn't run. He needed information. This information wasn't the stuff you could find in books. Just the thought of knowing something that most scholars didn't made Jay excited. He then remembered that the particular spell he cast lasted for a long time.
Of course, H]he thought, I am such an idiot. Why didn't I cast a spell that only lasted for two hours?
Jay then realized that he hadn't gotten the girl's name. He hadn't given her his name either.
He was so lost in thought he didn't notice as the fire went out. But Jay fell asleep eventually and he woke up just at dawn. Luckily before the mysterious girl did.
He sat up, remembering the day before. His thoughts excited him. Jay couldn't wait for the girl to wake up, but there was no way to wake her up otherwise. He sat there with little patience for about an hour before the girl woke up.
As expected she was filled with rage. Jay didn't care he just wanted information. He started asking her questions about her sin, but this only seemed to fuel her rage.
“What do you know about your sin?” He asked her.
Her face went from rage to confusion.
“What? What do you mean? I don't know what you are talking about,” She said.
Jay didn't know how to respond, her answer only made him want to ask more but he decided to ask just one more question.
“You do know about the seven deadly sins, right?” This only seemed to enrage her.
“I still don't know what you're talking about,” She replied.
Jay's questions only seemed to confuse her which added to the already boiling rage. He looked at her.
This is frustrating. She doesn't know anything, he thought.
Jay got so lost in his thoughts that he stood up and started walking off. The girl yelled at him to untie her. He went back to take the ropes off. As he was walking he had a thought.
“Are you coming or not?”
The girl looked surprised. She stood up and followed him to the road.
“I believe I haven't told you my name yet, have I?” He asked. “The names Jay.”
The girl stayed quiet. She seemed lost in thought. Jay poked her to get her attention.
“And your name is…?” Jay asked.
She just looked at the ground. It seemed as though she was still angry.
Maybe I was right. It seems she is the sin of wrath, he thought.
She seemed to be confused and he had to repeat himself multiple times. He hated repeating himself.
She finally told him her name. It was Elise. He thought about it for a few seconds.
“Well, that is a very pretty name.”
They walked in silence for a little while. As they came towards a path by the cliff Elise stopped. Jay was curious as to why she stopped so much. Before he could say anything Elise walked over to the cliff. Jay walked to her side quickly, before she could do anything.
“It's not worth it,” he told her. “You have a lot you could still do.”
He knew how she felt. For the first couple of years after he left his village he had those thoughts. He could tell she was about to jump, so before she could he hugged her. This usually helped him calm down, but this seemed to make her want to jump more. Jay knew it wouldn't be a good idea to let Elise be alone. He had to gather all the sins together. If Elise died there would be one less sin. He had to get her mind off these things. Jay thought about it for a second. He suddenly had an idea.
“Do you want to get some food?”
