I’m always amazed by how much info you’re able to pack into a few panels! We learn a lot about Greed just from this page (well, Midas — look I’m going to switch between his names a lot xD) From a poor background but instead of wanting things for himself, he wants them for his mother, much like I think how it was with him and Lust. He stole the bread for her and it seems like this might not be the first time he’s done something for her since she lectures him gently, but also isn’t surprised that he stole it (he might not necessarily have stolen before, but done other things and brought them back to her). With Lust it seemed like he kept craving things (gold, power, comfort, etc) for himself, but perhaps it was similar in that he wanted things for her so she’d never have to work hard or face difficulty - bettering the lives of others makes him happier than bettering his own life, perhaps. I think it’s easy to want too much in that case - not only from starting from a poor background (interestingly a lot of powerful and eventually corrupt figures in history started out poor too), but by wanting to help others, it’s easy to keep going until you become greedy, because you lose sight of your original intentions or just want to give more than you should. ...Well I’m rambling now xD But that’s what I think happened to Greed, going off of this and precious flashbacks we’ve seen of him.

As for his mom - am I guessing right that by “dirty work” and with her looking that way after the captain of the guard left, she’s working as a prostitute to help them get some money? Although with the bruises and likely abusive alcoholic husband, it could also be just that the captain came by because of a domestic abuse report. Or it’s both but the captain wasn’t a customer — idk, the second she said “dirty work” I went along that line of thinking xD
