Celeste had found out that the square room with a low dome ceiling was the Dean's office. Celeste also learnt that Vivienne was the Dean of Enforcement Training in the Central Barracks. Before Officer Vivienne had calmed down and returned to her office, Celeste had tried to sneak out of the Barracks. She soon ran into the Military grade robot that was assigned to watch over her. It was blocking a narrow the hallway that was the only way back out. This robot wasn't smooth and round like Hudson; it had a rough surface and sharper planes. Where as Hudson was a clinical white, this robot was a deep green. When the robot stood still, it could be mistaken for part of the architecture. Although the robot had its back towards her, it sensed her right away. "Miss Sidman, may I recommend waiting for Officer Vivienne in her office," a deep human like voice came from the robot. Celeste was so shaken by this experience that she quickly returned to the office to wait for the Dean.
When Vivienne finally returned, she brought with her a flat, tablet of glass. She swore and tapped the tablet a few times against her palm before it came to life. The electronic tablet displayed some charts on the glass which Vivienne projected into the air in front of her. Vivienne sat on the metal desk instead of her chair, so that she could add some height to her authority. Only then did she acknowledge Celeste, sitting below her on a short backed metal chair. Vivienne studied the graphs hovering in the air, clicking her tongue repeatedly as she scanned. "Your stats are terrible!" Vivienne announced, "You tested extremely low for strength and defense. You have no agility and you are very slow." Celeste was required to undergo some test drills before she met with the Dean. When Celeste had to carry heavy square boxes across a tightrope, she fell into the pond underneath. When she had to sneak past crisscrossing laser beams, she set them off. And when she had to block an Enforcement Officer who was attacking her with a thin wooden pole, every single hit got her body. To top it all off, she took forever to complete each test.
Celeste was not terrible at fighting or defending; she had been trained by Iris Raven Song herself. The problem was that nothing about the test was natural, it all felt strange to her. The boxes she carried across the tightrope had unnatural angles to them, they were hard to hold on to. The laser's beams glowed in a way that hurt her eyes. And she wouldn't normally fight with a weapon; she was a Mage! Of course they couldn't know that she was a Mage. Without magic however, Celeste was officially the most useless Citizen to ever walk into the Barracks. Celeste sighed deeply causing Vivienne to glare at her. "You think this is a joke! You are an embarrassment," Vivienne said as if it were fact, "You can't be the result of two senior Enforcement Officers." Satisfied when Celeste sank into her chair, Vivienne continued scanning the graphs. She zoomed in to a particular graph that caught her interest. Celeste saw that it was her health stats. Vivienne eyed the graph curiously. "Your health records are... strange. You seem to get sick at the same times each year." Celeste tensed.
Elemental mages never got sick. Iris always said that it was a gift from nature. With the technological advances in Edeth country, major illnesses were rare in the Cities. Minor illnesses and injuries however, still happened from time to time. Accidents couldn't be avoided and the minor illnesses were even considered necessary to keep the body's immune system working. The government of Edeth had managed to keep diseases controlled by using technology to monitor the Citizens' health on a regular basis. Health Caretakers all over Edeth kept very detailed and up-to-date records of each Citizen's health. The health records were also linked to the identification system. Anyone whose health record could not be found was assumed to be either an Outlander or a Mage. That meant that an Elemental Mage would have to fake sickness from time to time to blend in. However, Celeste had not anticipated that she would join Enforcement.
"Allergies! I am sensitive at certain times of the year," Celeste said thinking quickly. Lucky for Celeste, that was the distraction that she needed. "Allergies? Great! Don't you have any good qualities?" Vivienne complained. She seemed to be talking to herself now, "We will lose our position as the top Barracks in the country!" Vivienne pinched the bridge of her nose in anger. She said to Celeste, "I am tempted to put you on forrest duty. Maybe your Outlander will kill you or a nasty jungle fever." Celeste wished she was on jungle duty, maybe she had found her escape.
Vivienne pulled herself together with some effort. She reached into a box beneath her desk and pulled out a rookie uniform set. Celeste got up and moved towards Vivienne to reluctantly take the uniform that represented so many things that she hated. Vivienne moved her head closer to Celeste and sniffed her neck. Celeste jumped back in surprise. "What are you doing?" Celeste demanded. "You don't ... smell right," Vivienne claimed and asked, "Are you sick right now?" Celeste was confused. "No Im fine," she replied but took two steps back from Vivienne. Vivienne didn't look convinced but she nodded anyway before saying, "You are dismissed. May creation have mercy on your soul!"
