“Ow!”
“Will you stop flinching?” Echo huffed, dabbing away the dirt and blood from the boy’s wounds, her hand clamped around his ankle.
“I told you I can clean the damn cuts myself!” Quispi squawked, trying and failing to fight back, “I’m not some child who needs to be coddled!”
“Too bad, I’m doing it” Echo said, continuing her work as Quispi glared angrily at the top of her bowed head, “You want to tell me why you ran now?”
“Because fuck you!”
“Not an answer” Echo said, finally letting them go and going to toss the soiled cotton wad in the nearby trash, “try again”
“Try---What sorta bullshit—“
Quispi please she just wants to help Finch said, struggling not to fall back asleep, She’s trying to help
She’s being a bitch about it! He retorted, crossing his arms in frustration, Where’s your uncle?
“And that’s my phone” Echo grumbled, pulling out the vibrating square of metal from her pocket, “oh I see how it is. Uh huh—you’re uncle had to go attend something near Sonora” Echo huffed
“Sonora…?” Finch squeaked nervously
“Him and Sierra. Says he’ll try and be back before the sun” Echo said
“But that’s almost six hours away” Finch muttered, scratching his claws against the chair he was sitting on nervously
“About that. Maybe four and a half if they catch the right winds” Echo said
Kid it’ll be ok Quispi said, He
W—what if he tries to get rid me again? What if he kills me this time? Finch responded in a panic, bowing his head as he tried to hide the panic on his face,
I won’t let him. My body now too. Quispi said, still unsure just who had pawned off the boy in the first place,
“Finch!” a voice called, rushing into the room, “And Quippy…Ipper…uh…”
“Quispi. Hello Edward” Quispi groaned, the blond appearing in the doorway with a grin, towering over the smaller boy, “What?”
“You need a nickname, seriously” Ed frowned, Finch’s panic seemed to dissolve the moment the man appeared. Quispi made a mental note to mark him off the list of ‘people who could have possibly effed up’, “Anyway. I just got a message and—“
“Uncle Asema is out?” Finch said
“Yes. Which means milkshakes for dinner~” Edward grinned, turning from the doorway
Finch what is he talking about?
“Good because I’m not babysitting”
“I’M GROWN DAMN IT!” Quispi shouted, “WHY DID WE HAVE TO GET STUCK IN THE KID BODY?!” Quispi shut himself off as Finch let out an excited giggle, covering their mouth as he smiled, the boy standing them up on sore feet,
“Quisp seems to sound like he doesn’t want some”
“Don’t call me that!”
“Fine then. Nickname we can work on later. Common you two get into something less muddy and we’ll hit the town” Edward said, shooing Echo away from his nephew.
T—town…? Quispi said nervously Like…with people?
Yeah…? Finch said,
And you think that’s…safe. For me? The two watched as Echo excused herself, Edward giving them a final grin as he ducked out, closing the door to Finch’s bedroom behind him.
“Safe?” Finch asked, turning and spotting himself in the small wall mirror on the back of the door. Finch was taken aback. His eyes were…different.
“I’m a dark-kin kid. People don’t exactly like us.”
“Yeah but so long as you don’t go on some murder spree I doubt anyone will really notice” Finch said, still watching himself in the mirror. “Do our eyes…always do that?”
“Do what?”
“That” Finch said, gesturing to the mirror as Quispi looked
“Oh! That. Yeah. Why do you think people can tell whose talking?”
“I thought we…sounded different?”
“I tried that, made our throat hurt” Quispi said, looking down as Finch turned, “Really ran us into the mud didn’t I?”
“I still don’t get why you were panicked” Finch muttered, “Miss Echo is…she’s nice” Finch dug through a drawer of crumpled clothes, leaning forward on the old worn drawers, “what do you want to wear?”
“I don’t care if you think she’s nice I don’t want anything to do with her”
“Yeah but why?” Finch asked
“Because I—“
“It’s not like you owe her something” Finch continued, throwing off the muddy clothes, “ow! More thorns”
“Common you two so slow!” Edward called, banging on the door and making Finch jump to move, “it’s gonna be dawn before we get there!”
