Delight’s whole life had been consumed by one emotion. Envy. One day after another, it grew and festered inside her. Everyone was better than her at things, had better families, owned nicer objects, and lived better lives. She was never recognized for anything that she could do, and jealousy quickly consumed her as she got older and began realizing these things. Why was she like this? Every thought that passed through her head made her feel worse about herself.
She lived a neglected life, bouncing from relative to relative, never knowing true parental love after her mom had abandoned her, not wanting a burden in her life such as a small child.
She didn’t have any talents or features that made her stand out. She was a passing face in a crowd. A day wouldn’t pass where she wouldn’t think, if only I had that, or, I wish that I could do that. She hated it, and the way it took over her waking thoughts. She tried, oh how hard she tried to will these thoughts away. She just wanted to have a slightly happier life, which just added to the list of things she was jealous that other people had.
Delight became bitter. She secluded herself and tried to pay as little attention to the outside world as possible. It helped keep her envy in check and from getting out of hand.
She walked through the busy town street, keeping her head low and eyes on the ground.
As her thoughts threatened to spill over the brink, she ran into someone.
“Watch it,” The lady practically barked at her.
“Hmpf,” Was all Delight responded with. It also didn't help that she had looked at the woman. Her beautiful golden hair, and entrancing different colored eyes.
Delight could feel the envy in her start bubbling when she saw the utter gorgeousness of this woman.
Following shortly after she moved on were two men. Her eyes immediately landed on the shorter of the two, completely disregarding the other one.
I want, I want, I want. I wish he was mine. The man was the most beautiful human being Delight had ever seen in her life.
He had a delicate, lithe body. His eyes were a warm and inviting copper color, and his hair was black as night. It was wavy and came down to the tips of his ears, and all that Delight could imagine was being able to run her fingers through it while placing sweet kisses on his perfect face.
She shook her head to clear these thoughts and pinched herself harsh enough on her arm to draw blood, adding to the number of scars on her arms that keep herself from falling apart.
She would never have him. Yet again defeated and left to wallow in her own jealousy.
Delight kept walking, making her way to the local bakery before she heard loud yelling coming from behind her.
She turned to see what all the ruckus was about and noticed the same three people from earlier. The blonde woman and brown-haired man were arguing about something, what it was Delight didn’t know. But she did notice the beautiful man stepping back from the two and looking scared.
The woman reached for her sword and rushed at the man, but he jumped back from her before he got hurt. He pulled a dagger out of his bag for defense against the attacking woman. However, he didn’t notice when her leg stuck out and kicked him squarely in the chest, launching him into the building behind him, which happened to be a bar.
The woman ran into the building following after him. Not even a minute after she entered, the building came crashing down behind the two as they came running out. The woman’s eyes were crazy, and she was slashing her sword at the man in frantic swings.
Delight could tell that the man was becoming flustered, not knowing how to calm the woman down or defuse the situation.
They were nearing the other man and were becoming dangerously close.
Delight didn’t know what came over her, but she saw the sword slash down, and she knew if she didn’t intervene it would hit the gorgeous man. Delight wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if she let anything happen to him. So, before her brain could even react, her feet started moving.
At an unhuman-like speed, she jumped in front of the man and grabbed the blade of the sword with her hand. She could feel the sharp metal cut into her skin, and she could feel the blood trickling from her palm.
Delight winced from the pain, but it wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be. Usually, her hand would have been completely lopped off.
“Stop it,” Delight growled through clenched teeth. “Can’t you see you’re hurting this town?”
“Elise, drop the sword and we can just talk about this,” The man that had been fighting against the woman said.
The woman, Elise, glared for a few more seconds before letting go of the sword, which allowed Delight to drop it on the ground.
Delight inspected the wound on her hand. Surprisingly, it wasn’t that deep and would probably heal in a few days, but there would definitely be a nasty scar.
“Here,” The brown haired man reached into his bag, pulling out a piece of cloth and handing it to her.
Delight accepted it, pressing it down on the open cut. But that wasn’t what hurt the most. She was jealous of this man’s kindness towards her. And she felt terrible because of that.
“Um, we should probably get out of here,” The beautiful man from before said, glancing around at all the angry glares they were getting from the townsfolk.
“Yeah, let's go. And you're coming with us,” The other man responded and grabbed Delight by the wrist as the four of them began running through the crowded streets.
