Nanobuilds

More Nanobuild lore (because I'm damn sure not to get this into it in the actual comic) :
While not being the direct cause of the “collapse” that the world had to rebuild itself from a century ago, nanobuilds were very useful tools of the empire once upon a time. impenetrable bodyguards, indestructible messengers, handy for travel if you lost a convoy.
but eventually, they came to abuse nano abilities (assassinations, sabotage, and all-out war machines against “competition”.)
when the empire had eaten itself from the inside out many people were still afraid of the “demons” that once tore through their cities causing chaos. An agency for dealing with machines was founded and they detained or destroyed any existing nanobuilds.
it became an unspoken rule after the recovery, that Nanobuilds are an ill-advised concept. use of nanotech itself is widely accepted and benefitted from, but any autonomous thing made entirely from nanomachines is questionable in motive due to their short and violent history. (this fostered a fear in other robots and droids for some as well, a fear the agency likes to profit from)
Despite the warnings against it many curious scientists wonder about nanobuilds other potential and seek out existing ones for study. Any nanobuilds created post-collaspe must be entered into the machine reclamation agency registry so that they're easy to track for “when they inevitably go rogue”.
However. some geniuses can be petty because they hate the agency.
