The evening came quickly, and they had already set up a camp. Now that they had finally stopped moving, they finally had time to talk about what was to come, or prepare some kind of plan. But, none of them particularly felt like talking. Julian's head was still hurting, Oliver was unsatisfied with the non-existent answers he had been given, and Alice was just plain confused. Even Jos was being strangely quiet. They were worried about how the others were coping with such a large exposure to magic.
'So...' Jos started, poking the fire they had just set up with a stick. 'How are you all doing?'
Oliver glared at them, just being generally salty. Jos held his gaze for a moment, pursing their lips at the silence.
'I'm doing great, thanks for asking.' Jos said sarcastically, dropping the stick they were holding onto the fire.
'Sorry Jos, my head is still hurting.' Julian's voice was soft as he stared into the fire.
Alice fidgeted slightly, unsure of what to say. It was unbearably awkward, but she knew that at some point they were all going to have to open up.
'Uh...' She began to pick her nails. 'I saw myself learning how to use a sword, and how my Dad was being a bastard about it. It was weird...'
Jos smirked, as Julian looked at her in slight shock. He had no idea of what her life had been like, or what difficulties she had faced when becoming a knight. In his mind there was no way Esteria could be so sexist and harsh, but he had lived in a safe bubble his entire life, not exposed to the harsh reality of life outside of a palace.
However, Oliver sneered slightly at her remark. He knew that now she had opened up, he had to open up, and he wasn't one who enjoyed sharing personal matters.
'I saw when Julian took me off the streets.' He rushed his words, looking away from Jos and their now shocked face.
They had no idea that he had ever lived in poverty, especially since how well dressed and well-spoken he was. Alice wasn't as shocked, as she had heard the rumours surrounding him, but she never truly wondered if they were true.
'I'm not sure what I saw... But, I was with, uh, my Dad. And there was a map with a coin on... But I couldn't hear anything. It was all muffled.' Julian spoke about his memory sparingly. He didn't know if Jos had figured out that he was the prince, but he didn't want to take any chances. They were the first person to see him as something over than a prince, and he wanted it to stay that way.
After Julian shared with the others, they looked to Jos expectantly.
'Hey.' Jos put their hands up, laughing slightly. 'I didn't go into the Order Of The Divine, I haven't got any weird memories to share.
'Come on!' Julian said, leaning forward on his elbows. 'You must have something interesting you can tell us about yourself...'
'Okay, okay.' Jos sighed, looking away from he others as they smiled. 'Uh, I'm an orphan, I did my magic ceremony at 10 and didn't die despite doing it 5 years early, and illegally, oh and with makeshift ingredients... Then I went to EMA, you know, the Esterian Magic Academy, but then I got kicked out at 14 for misconduct, and yeah, that's me.'
'You went to EMA? You?' Oliver scoffed, not believing them in the slightest.
'Gee, no need to sound so surprised.' Jos rolled their eyes, deliberately imitating Oliver's signature move. Despite what they said, they do understand where his shock came from.
EMA was known as incredibly prestigious, and very few spots were available. So the fact that Jos, the light hearted, poor weirdo had studied there was a shock. The current head of Magical Studies at the palace had attended the academy, and appeared the a few years older than Jos. So the idea that they had attended the same school, and possibly even known each other, was a thought that neither Oliver nor Julian wanted to divulge in.
'Wait!' Alice said out of the blue, her eyes widening as if she had just figured something out. 'The coin is a marker to where we are supposed to go! It’s obvious.'
'What?' Oliver questioned, his mind had wandered elsewhere.
'I'm talking about Julian's dream thingy.' Alice was now on her feet, and looking down at Oliver.
'Oh...' He murmured quietly.
'The coin has definitely got to be the goal. Do you know where it was placed?'
The all looked towards Julian, turning their necks creepily in sync.
'Uh...' He flushed slightly under the sudden pressure. 'Just... Just give me the night to think.'
He got to his feet and walked a few feet away from the others. His head was still jumbled, but he hoped a good night's sleep would help the memory become clearer.
