For a little context, during the World War I Era, the U.S changed anything from the German Language to English, since they were enemies in the war.
For example, Sauerkraut would be translated and referred to "Liberty Cabbage."
I think this is what they were going with the joke, using the same thinking but none the less, it was hilarious.
