"I hear you'll be working with me today," Alvin says the moment I appear at his side.
“Sure am. I’ll do my best.”
Alvin smiles, then points to a chair nearby and asks that I retrieve it. After handing him the papers given to me by Zeke, I walk over to one of the chairs and roll it back to Alvin's desk, where I take a seat.
Alvin and I got along during my last visit and that doesn't change today. He's as talkative as I am, and while his explaining is sometimes sporadic, he definitely knows what he's doing. I take notes, jot down things he tells me to remember, and ask the occasional question when I need him to elaborate. Alvin has no issue doing so, sometimes even repeating stuff he said prior so I can write it down more accurately.
I make a mental note to look all this over later when I get home. The quicker I get the hang of all this, the better. I’m going to have to make a timeline of when I can study for school and when I can study for work. My calendar is going to look like a shitstorm but I’ve gotta keep on top of both.
About two hours later I feel a dark aura behind me. Alvin, on the other hand, seems totally okay with spinning his chair around to lock eyes with that evil presence.
"How are things going?" Zeke's voice says from behind me. Turning, I look up to find Zeke with his arms crossed right behind us. Should have figured he was the dark presence. There's no one else in the office that can even compare.
“Good. Carter is taking notes, asking questions, and if he keeps this up, he'll be replacing me in no time," Alvin says, causing Zeke's lips to twitch back into an amused grin. He gives me this look that I swear can actually speak for him.
Yeah, right.
It irks me a bit. Shaking his head, Zeke waves Alvin's comment off and disappears behind his office doors as swiftly as he appeared.
"Well, wasn't that sweet? He came to check on the new kid," Alvin teases, nodding his head at me in a teasing manner. I don't know how one manages to do that, but Alvin somehow pulls it off.
"I'm truly honored, honestly." And completely freaked out, but that's cool, we don't need to discuss that.
"You're doing well, Carter. I'm sure you will on Wednesday, too, and soon you're going to feel right at home here."
I hope that’s true. It will make this semester and internship go by quickly, and that's all I really want.
My first day ends so fast that I don't believe my eyes when I look to the clock that says it's actually a little after five. Alvin and I probably wouldn't have noticed it either if others weren't slowly leaving.
"Well, that's it for today! I've got some more work to do but you can head home," Alvin says, waving goodbye to some of those who are already leaving. "I imagine Zeke will have you working with Jacob or Wendy on Wednesday. Keep taking notes, too, or you'll start to forget what we all teach you."
"Believe me, I am too much of an overachiever to not to take notes." I laugh, getting up and making sure I have all my belongings before saying goodbye. I make sure to tell everyone else I'm leaving as well, but doing that ends up hurting me in the long run.
Just when I'm about to leave, Zeke comes out of his office. He, too, must be calling it a day, because he's saying goodbye to everyone, insisting that they call it quits for the night regardless of what they're doing. Some get up and take that as a chance to leave, while others, like Alvin, remain behind anyways.
I debate on lingering in the office to avoid being with Zeke in the elevator, but… that's going to make it worse, isn't it? I honestly have no fucking clue so I'm winging it at this point.
Anyways, I walk out of the office right behind Zeke and the two of us end up at the elevators together. It's not as if we're alone, some others from the office are there as well. A few are speaking with Zeke about work and when the elevator doors open we all squish ourselves like a can of sardines within. Somehow I end up right next to Zeke, our arms brushing against one another yet he pays it, and me, no mind.
I contemplate joining the conversation Zeke is in but find myself at a bit of a loss. He and a fellow worker are discussing something that I don't quite understand nor know much about so I end up remaining silent. Luckily, the ride is a short one and we reach the ground floor in no time.
However, just as the doors open and everyone begins to pile out Zeke finally looks at me and says, "See you Wednesday."
With that, he walks out of the elevator in the direction of the parking garage. My brain sort of stops functioning for a moment for unknown reasons. When it finally realizes that, yes, I need it to work properly in order to do basic tasks, my thoughts kick back into gear.
I barely manage to jump out of the elevator before the doors close, following after Zeke since I have to go to my car, too. However, he is long gone by the time I make it into the parking lot. Not that I wanted him to be around since I still have no clue what to say to him.
Maybe I need to just forget about it. Who cares if our first meeting wasn't so great because I still got the job. He's my boss and it's not like we're meant to be super friendly or have to talk regularly. It doesn't matter and I need to get over it otherwise I'm going to go insane!
Right, yes, good decision.
With that, I successfully end the first day of my internship without incident.
