Dear Tapas readers,

my name is Maurizio Caiazzo (aka Mauri*) I’m an illustrator and painter based in Milan, Italy (you know, that funny country shaped as a boot).
Here I'm presenting my project called “Tony the bird” a comic composed of episodic pages.

A couple of words about Tony the bird
The original idea for “Tony the bird“ came from Steinbeck’s (wow!) early novel “Tortilla flat” and his portrait of a group of paisanos enjoying life and wine. I chose to represent the paisanos as birds exploring contemporary life.

The weird characters of the comics are: first of all Tony, the evil and rude central character, his best friend naive Aldous, Tony’s papa Ignatius, an old funny bird suffering from alzheimers, Adolf a homosexual intellectual, Cosimo a hypochondriac, Lubna the insecure female, Jamaica whose always stoned and others...

Tony and his friends by nature are errant and jobless. They spend the day talking critiquing one another and the world around them. The world below them changes from city scapes, rural settings to life on street lights or city monuments or simple trees.
They move as in nature, they are extremely free, they fly but only occasionally in the book.
