Guest Post: Ivy Song's Picks
May 18, 2018
Today’s guest post is from Ivy Song, writer of His Barcode Tattoo (comic, novel) and Airplanes (comic, novel).
Hi guys! It’s me, IVY!!! (Sorry, I’m from New York, we’re a little loud here, haha!) I hope y’all like lists because this one tells you what some of my favorite comics are about and why I love them!
Behind the Scenes by Sophia
Synopsis: Cherin Lee is just your average actress who doesn't really stand out in the crowd. Who knew her life would change for a cup of coffee?
For those of you who know me, I love k-dramas. Did I tell you what happened in the summer of 2017? I was mad salty that my childhood was over. Ok, not really, but I was about to enter college! And for some reason, I had the notion that high school ending = no more free summers. So I sat on my friend’s Dramafever account (for those who pay for subscriptions and let your friends use it for free, props to you! The world doesn’t deserve you <3) and watched everything. I love k-dramas, and this comic embodies everything that a drama is. I saw it on Tapas, read all the available chapters and thought, “I need it.” *subscribed*
Hwaja by Hong Jacga
Synopsis: At age 9, Ryu decides to explore a house rumored to be haunted. Within the long and maze-like corridors of the house, Ryu hears 5 words that will forever change his life: "What did you bring me?"
This comic was an emotional roller coaster, but in a good way. This coming-of-age story is dark but it’s beautiful. To be honest, I didn’t understand who exactly Hwaja was until the end. It all hit me when I finished the series. You ever read something ambiguous and then sit there in shock when you realize what it means? Not to be dramatic but I think I had an epiphany in that moment. I felt chills. I sat in my seat for a good hour marinating in my thoughts and then I exploded—“OH MY GOD OH MY GOD HWAJA IS ___ HWAJA IS ____” (Girl, I’m not trying to give you any spoilers!) This was great. 11/10 would read again.
Love Deficiency by 24BEE
Synopsis: In Love Deficiency, people are in danger of turning invisible and dying if they're not in love! Thus the romance of a man and a woman begin because of the need to survive!
WHERE DO I BEGIN WITH THIS?! Excuse me, 24BEE, I don’t know you, but I love your comic. Love Deficiency tells the story of Yooha and Sak. Yooha’s boyfriend dumps her for Sak’s girlfriend and in turn, Sak and Yooha get together so they don’t die from the invisible virus. (I know, it sounds like a k-drama). Can you imagine if you lived in a world where you turn invisible if you are single? That would kinda suck…
I followed this story from the very beginning and I remember when it would update with 3 episodes at a time. Then when it started releasing 1 episode a week instead of 3, I was devastated! That’s how good it was! Check it out! Need another reason to? Love Deficiency has one of the BEST character developments from start to finish!
Subway Line 1 by Eunjae Lee
Synopsis: The world has come to chaos. An unknown virus haunts every living soul, and one man is determined to reach his beloved before it's too late. His journey takes him closer and closer, but he faces adversity and strife. That's when he faces reality. He sees the world around him. He sees a world faced with something more dangerous than the virus.
ZOMBIESSS! What’s not to love?! Alright, fine, I’ll give you that one. It’s hard to like someone when they’re half-dead and decomposing, I get it. But this is not your ordinary zombie apocalypse story. This comic was intriguing from the start.
It’s about a man who’s trying to survive in a town where everyone is infected by a virus. He’s walking down subway line 1 in hopes that he’ll find his girlfriend. I’m not too far into the story (don’t spoil me please!) but I can’t turn away from this—it’s one of those stories that you can’t put down. I need to know what happens next!!!
Honey Dill by Ryan Harby
Synopsis: Drawings + jokes mashed together with crafting glue. Updates weekly.
I know Gabby, (I call her my Tapas boss—she edits all my stuff and makes sure I don’t look like a fool on the internet before my stories go live) is gonna see this. So Gabby, put a picture of the Honey Dill story poster up here. Got it? Cool. (Gabby: Ok.)
GUYS, LOOK AT THAT AVOCADO. It’s damn cute! I saw it and subscribed. I didn’t even know what the story was, but you know what’s even better? Mr. Avocado over here doesn’t even have a story line. I love gag comics that are just jokes. You can skip to any chapter and you won’t be confused. I found this recently but I’m 29 chapters in and still cackling.
Mushroom Movie by potato-chip
Synopsis: a daily webcomic. 80% puns, 12% relatable, 17% dumb, 1% illogical.
If you don’t like avocados, (I know a few people don’t understand the hype that is avocado toast. It’s a hipster thing, ok?) I got you. It’s all good in the hood. This nonchalant mushroom is everything. I’m telling you, this whole series is a meme. Let’s read the synopsis again: 80% puns, 12% relatable, 17% dumb, 1% illogical
‘Nuff said.
Alright, that concludes my list. If you’ve made it this far, congrats, you’ve managed to sit through part one of my nonsense. Oh, that’s right, this won’t be the last time you’ll see me. >:D
If you have favorites that aren’t on this list, send them my way!
HAPPY READING!!
