A Crown For A Stranger

Prologue: Captured by Royal Decree

Prologue: Captured by Royal Decree

Nov 15, 2024

It was a day like any other in the modest estate of the Baron. The sun was warm, the garden filled with the scent of blooming roses, and the clinking of porcelain teacups echoed pleasantly through the open air. Erika sat with her parents, enjoying a peaceful luncheon, blissfully unaware that her world was about to turn upside down.

The tranquility shattered when the clamor of heavy boots broke through the serene atmosphere. Erika looked up, startled, as a group of royal guards stormed into their garden. Their polished armor gleamed under the sun, but the stern expressions they wore were as cold as winter’s chill.

“This must be a mistake,” Erika thought, confusion knitting her brows together. Her father, the Baron, stood quickly, his face paling.

“May I help you, sirs?” he asked his voice firm but tinged with unease.

One of the guards stepped forward, eyeing Erika with an assessing gaze that made her skin crawl. He cleared his throat and spoke in a loud, official tone. “We hereby capture this beautiful noblewoman in her twenties, with ebony hair, brown eyes, and a slightly tan complexion, fitting the description given by His Royal Highness.”

Erika’s eyes widened, her mind racing. Captured? What nonsense was this? The guard's words barely made sense, yet there was no room for misunderstanding. They were here for her.

“I’m sorry,” Erika began, raising her hands as if to ward off their approach. “You must be mistaken. I’ve never met the Prince, and I’ve certainly never attended any royal ball.”

Her father’s face contorted in shock. He moved between the guards and his daughter, trying to shield her. “This is absurd! You cannot simply take my daughter without cause. What kind of accusation is this?”

The guards remained unfazed. One of them, a tall, burly man with a scar across his cheek, turned to the Baron and replied curtly, “This is a royal decree. Your daughter fits the description of the woman His Highness has chosen. We have orders to bring her to the palace immediately.”

Erika’s mother, a woman of fiery spirit and sharp wit, was far from silent. Her accent—a melodic lilt from her homeland far across the sea—grew more pronounced as her temper flared. She pointed an accusing finger at the guards, her voice a low, threatening hiss. “What sort of kingdom abducts innocent women in broad daylight? My daughter is not some object to be claimed by your Prince.”

The lead guard’s expression darkened, clearly unused to such defiance. He squared his shoulders, stepping closer to Erika’s mother. “I advise you to hold your tongue, foreign woman,” he spat, his hand inching towards the hilt of his sword.

“Mother, please,” Erika interjected, squeezing between them before things could escalate. Her heart pounded in her chest, not just from fear but from a rising anger at the absurdity of it all. “This is ridiculous. I’m telling you, you’ve got the wrong girl. I’ve never even been to a royal ball!”

But the guards were resolute. One of them tightened his grip on her arm, pulling her away from her parents. “Silence!” he barked. “You will be presented to the Prince, and you will behave with the respect due to His Royal Highness.”

“Respect?” Erika scoffed, wrenching her arm free for a moment. “You barge into our home, drag me away without explanation, and you expect respect? What could the Prince possibly want from me?”

The guard’s next words left the entire family in stunned silence.

“He intends to marry you,” the guard announced, his voice filled with a kind of grim finality.

For a moment, it seemed as if time itself had frozen. Erika’s parents exchanged a look of sheer disbelief, while Erika’s mind struggled to process what she had just heard.

“Pardon me?” Erika said, her voice cracking. She blinked, half-expecting someone to laugh and reveal this was all some elaborate prank. “I think I misheard you. Could you perhaps repeat what you just said?”

“He is going to marry you,” the guard repeated, his tone flat and unwavering.

“WHAT?!” Erika’s shout reverberated through the garden, startling a flock of birds into flight. Her mother’s mouth hung open in shock, while her father looked as though he might collapse from the sheer absurdity of it all.

“There must be some mistake,” the Baron stammered, clutching his chest as if the news had physically struck him. “My daughter—marry the Prince? She hasn’t even met him!”

“That’s correct!” Erika exclaimed, throwing her hands up in exasperation. “I’ve never seen the Prince in my life, let alone made him fall in love with me. I wouldn’t even know him if he stood right in front of me!”

The guard’s grip on her arm tightened once more, this time with less patience. “That is not our concern. You fit the description given by His Highness, and that is all that matters. You will come with us now.”

“Father, do something!” Erika pleaded, twisting her neck to look back at her parents as she was dragged towards the waiting carriage.

The Baron looked helpless, his shoulders slumping in defeat. “It’s a royal decree, Erika. I… I can’t oppose it.”

Her mother, however, was not so easily deterred. She rushed forward, trying to pull Erika free. “You can’t just take her!” she shouted. “If you think I will allow this, then you do not know who you’re dealing with—”

“Enough!” The lead guard drew his sword halfway from its sheath, silencing her with the threat of its gleaming blade. “Interfere again, and there will be consequences.”

Erika’s breath hitched. She turned to her mother, eyes wide with fear. “Mother, please, don’t. I’ll go with them,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I’ll go.”

The guards yanked her towards the carriage, and Erika felt the ground shift beneath her feet. In a matter of minutes, her entire life had been upended. The familiar comfort of her home was replaced by the cold iron of the royal guard’s grip, and the path before her led straight into the unknown.

As the carriage door slammed shut behind her, Erika pressed her forehead against the cool glass window, her heart sinking. The last thing she saw was her mother’s tear-filled eyes and her father’s slumped figure, looking small and powerless against the might of the royal decree.

“This is how it begins,” she thought, a wave of bitterness washing over her. “All because I happened to look like the Prince’s so-called ‘true love.’”

As the carriage rattled away from her home, Erika couldn’t shake the ominous feeling that her life, as she knew it, had just ended.

In a kingdom ruled by traditions and arranged marriages, one defiant Prince devises a bold plan to escape a fate he never wanted: marriage to a dull but politically advantageous noblewoman. When the royal decree goes out, describing the "mysterious beauty" who supposedly stole the Prince's heart at a recent ball, the kingdom is abuzz, until the guards mistakenly capture a spirited young woman who fits the description, but never attended the ball in her life.

Erika, the headstrong daughter of a humble Baron from the Far East, finds herself abducted by the royal guards during a peaceful family luncheon and whisked away to the palace. There, she learns that she has been chosen as the Prince’s "one true love," a blatant lie concocted by the Prince himself to derail his impending arranged marriage.

Forced into an agreement for three months, Erika must navigate the treacherous waters of court life, facing the ire of the Emperor, the envy of noblewomen, and the mischievous, frustrating affections of the Prince. Despite her protests, the Prince is determined to marry her, charmed by her fiery spirit and unwillingness to bow to his whims, traits unlike any he’s encountered before.

Caught between her desire for a quiet life in the Far East and the Prince’s relentless pursuit, Erika must decide if she can trust this spoiled yet surprisingly sincere royal. As the unlikely pair clash and connect, they discover that perhaps fate had a hand in their accidental union after all. But with the entire kingdom watching, and powerful forces conspiring against them, can a love built on a lie truly stand the test of time?
