In 1858, John Mark received a letter saying that his mother had fallen ill. He traveled from his hometown, Vicksburg, Mississippi, to NYC. There, he met the one person who changed his life forever: Thomas Fery. John couldn't believe that out of all people, he fell for another man. He tried to work with it, but in that day and time, being gay wasn't exactly ideal.
John couldn't stay in New York forever though. With the Civil War brewing and the nation splitting, he knew he had to return to be with his family, even if it meant knowing that there was a chance he would never see Tom again. Not to mention, Tom was prone to making stupid, irrational decisions, putting everything--including his life--at stake.
