Description
The world was ending. Someone had to go.
They chose children. They always choose children. It is easier, I think, because children do not yet know the full weight of what is being taken from them, and by the time they do, it is already gone.
What happened to them in that other place, in the realm beyond the one we know, is not something the accounts agree on. They went. Something changed in them, or was changed for them, or was taken from them and replaced with something else entirely. When they returned, the world did not end.
The shrine maiden will tell you this with real warmth in her voice. She is not lying. That part is true.
What she does not tell you is this: one of those children was given away by his sister.
Voluntarily. Deliberately. With both hands.
Whether she wept doing it, whether he screamed or went quietly, whether they ever spoke again after, these things apparently do not belong in the official account. The official account has no room for the space between two siblings the night before one of them is surrendered to the gods.
That space is where this story lives.
