As I stood under the pouring rain, shivering like a child, the one question burned in my mind over and over:

How did I get here?

I looked down at my phone and dialed again. And again. And then once more. 

Nothing.

He wasn't picking up. There was a good chance he had blocked my number. I didn't blame him; how could I? But still, the impersonal message letting me know he was out of reach sent shivers down my spine. I tried one more time, hoping beyond hope. The raindrops disfigured the contact picture on the screen. At this rate, my phone would be drowned to death in a few more minutes. 

I didn't even wait to be sent to voicemail. I canceled the call and put the phone away in my backpack.

I was homeless.

Jobless.

Terrified.

How did I get here?
