Elena
"Elena, do you really need to study in a school that is hours away from home?" my dad asks as he help move my boxes to my new loft.
"Yes, dad! You know this is an important step for beings like us." I retorted while I wipe off the beads of sweat on my forehead.
Starting tomorrow, I, Elena Draven, officially becomes a university student! The first time I get to live away from my family and the first time I'll be studying with humans. When vampires are young, we are unable to fully control our urges so we are not allowed to interact with humans for a long period of time or left unsupervised. That's right, I'm a vampire, we are vampires. But don't be fooled by myths, vampires no longer latches their teeth on human's necks and drink blood. Seriously, that's an ancient story.
As time passes and humans evolve- just like the invention of cars and internet, us vampires have evolved physically to survive alongside humans to enjoy the quality of life without rousing problems. And because of that, our existence is kept a secret. It seems like, our ancestors have decided that it's for the best. I can't blame them, as vampires, we have certain abilities that can't be normal or mostly seen as 'supernatural' to people. Like in my case, I am able to read minds... well, it's more on hearing rather than reading, but I am unable to hear the thoughts of anyone who shares the same blood as me, so, I can never tell what my parents and siblings are thinking.
My dad has superhuman-like strength despite his slender mien making him really useful on events like today, while my mother has the ability to see the future in her dreams; I believe people call it as 'prophetic dreams', which is interesting and also scary. And as for my siblings... I'll talk more about that later on, but there are also vampires without 'abilities'. The main reason why everyone in our family has abilities is mostly because an ancestor of my mom and dad are both part of the first vampires, making the probability of all their offspring to have an ability a hundred percent guaranteed. We are what most calls a Pure Blood Vampires.
We are able to survive on eating food just like humans but for our immunity's sake, we rely on human energy to stay healthy- not drinking blood, although getting energy from blood works too, but it's too messy and troublesome that no one does that anymore in centuries.
Eating food is like eating canned food even if it's made from the freshest ingredients, while human energy is like eating the healthiest and luxurious meal. As a child we can't control the amount of energy we take from humans that it could cause them to faint or worse, die. We have little to no interactions with humans, but as a child our survival rate without human energy intake is also high. Until we reached eight years of age, the start of our lessons on how to control our intake.
Through a handshake, holding hands, a kiss, arms touching, and through finger tips touching, as long as we are able to touch a human's skin directly we are able to steal energy. There's no limit to how much we intake human energy, as long as we make sure that we do it at least once a day, even if it's only a 3 second touch.
"All of your boxes are already unloaded, I've put all of the boxes labelled bedroom into your bedroom and I did the same for the kitchen and living room..."
"Thanks dad, that'll make things easier for me!"
As I opened a box to sort out the things in it, I notice my dad staring at me in a daze with eyes slightly teary. Maybe it's because I'm the only girl in the three siblings that my dad is extra protective of me. I remember my older brother being against my move too but our mom already foreseen it and urged me to do so. My mom holding 'the law' in the family, my dad and older brother had no choice but to accept it.
"Dad... don't worry so much, I promise to come home on weekends as often as possible. I'll call home at least once a day." I reassured him as I held his hand with a smile.
"It's just that... my little Elly, you only turned eighteen and it feels like you're a real adult now, having your own place, living on your own... soon, you'll find someone and get married. I wish my only daughter would not rush in growing up too much." He responded as he stifled his welling tears.
"Come on, dad! Your imagination is the one rushing not me! Besides, I'll always be your little girl." I retorted as I lightly elbowed his side while he let out a big smile as he tousled my hair.
"Alright, alright... it's getting late and I should get going now if I want to get home before sundown. The couch will be arriving later, make sure to ask them to put it on the spot you want it to be at."
"Yes, dad..."
"Also, don't forget to shake the delivery man's hand for today's nutrition, if you hear anything shady or suspicious, just kick him out. Even if it's important that you stay healthy, your safety is still the priority."
"Dad..."
"And also, I noticed that you didn't pack any instant food and snacks so I've decided to pack a box filled with noodles, your favorite chips and apples. It's not nearly nutritional but it will help keep up your energy."
"Dad, mom will get mad if you don't arrive home on time!"
"Okay, I'm leaving now and don't forget to always lock the door and don't leave your windows and balcony open. You might be on the 8th floor but it's not impossible for people to break in through them and--"
"I got it already, dad! You should go now or you'll get scolded by mom." I nudged him closer to the door as I emphasized mom in my sentence.
"Wait!" He exclaimed as he turned to me and gave me a big tight hug... "Always stay safe my daughter, and if you are ever in trouble or in need, just call and your father will come to you right away... home will be quite lonely without you and we will miss you so much. Have fun and good luck with school, I'm proud of you. We are very proud of you and we love you."
My dad's words made me realize how much I'm going to miss home that I can't help but tear up too. But this is something I've always wanted to do and I believe that with my mother's urge, this is something that I should do. I watched my dad as he goes into the elevator as I wave to him good bye and wishes him safe travels. I went back inside and locked the door like he said and looked at the boxes everywhere.
"This is it Elena... finally, I can meet him again." I muttered to myself as I held my hand on my chest as I closed my eyes remembering the first encounter I've had with the human boy whose mind I couldn't read. I smile to myself, remembering his goofy smile as he greeted me hello.
