Witches are not just green skinned women with pointy noses who cast spells. They can be dangerous, beautiful, powerful, anything. However being a witch isn’t that great. Witches in this tale are lost souls reincarnated by the all seeing goddess. These souls are given powers to then protect themselves. These powers can be anything. Before we get into the story though let me remind you that witches aren’t the only magical creatures. There’s demons, gods, beasts, mermaids, anything you can imagine. But witches weren’t magical. They were given magic. For that reason witches were shunned and something to be feared. You couldn’t just gain magic. You had to be born with it. Even the goddess of magic agrees. Which is why the witch hunt was decreed. It was difficult to kill a witch. They were connected to an orb that gave them their powers but also immortality. If a witch died they would grow back from their orb. Some witches used this power to rise up, some even gaining the title of god. This angered the original gods and the god of death cursed the witches. Many witches were killed on that day. Their orbs shattered causing their bodies to do the same. The witches that ascended to godhood or were able to survive the curse were trapped in a pocket of time never aging trapped there forever. Witches were never seen since that day.
Just another day. I was walking to work in the morning. I stared at the ground as I walked with a cup of coffee in my hand. I didn’t want to look at people. The noise of the city surrounded me. Just two more blocks to go, I thought. Then I would be in my office. My nice calm quiet office. As I waited for the light to turn red before crossing the road I thought to myself a bit. Did I remember to do last night's paperwork? Did I remember to even close last night? If I had forgotten, my boss would surely be upset. Though, I’ve never seen him upset. He’s only ever reprimanded me but he never sounded too upset whenever he did. The light finally turned red and I crossed the road. I only had one more block to go. I could smell coffee from cafes, the bus as it stopped to pick people up, the kids talking to each other on their way to school. I always hated how lively the city was at times. But, at this time, while walking to work, it wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t too noisy and the smell of coffee calmed me. As I was relaxing in the morning atmosphere of the city something suddenly hit my side. I heard a tiny thump followed by an ow. I then looked up to see what had bumped into me. It was a little girl, she wasn’t wearing a school uniform though. She was pale with blue eyes, her hair was blonde and long. She wore a simple pink dress with white stockings and mary janes. She looks to be about primary school age.
“I’m so sorry-”. I extended my hand for her. She gently took it and jumped up. She started looking me up and down. “Are you alright?” I asked her, looking around to see if maybe her parents were looking for her.
I then looked back at her, her eyes gleamed as she asked me, “Are you a detective mister!”
I could see the excitement in her eyes. I guess my beige coat gave it away. “Yes, I am. Do you like detectives?”
Her eyes widened more as her smile grew bigger. She nodded excitedly, “Yes! I love detectives! I wanna be one when I grow up and catch bag guys and solve mysteries!” She jumped up and down as she expressed her excitement.
I couldn’t help but smile at how happy she was. “Well I’m sure you’ll be a great detective one day.”
She somehow got even happier. “Really!? Will you teach me then Mister Detective?!”
I didn’t know what to say for a second. I didn’t want to crush her dreams. “Well, you’re gonna have to wait till you’re a bit older for me to teach then. I’d also have to ask your parents. Are they here somewhere?”
She looked sad from the response. “But I’m already 7! I’m old enough! Also my parents are at home, they told me to go out and play.” She fiddled with her fingers. Why would her parents leave her all alone in such a big city.
I crouched down to her level. “Do you want me to bring you home then? Or do you know how to get home?”
She pouted “No! I want to go with you to your detective meeting place!” She stomped causing a scene. I could sense people looking at us and whispering.
I sighed. “Fine, but only for a bit alright. Just until your parents get you ok.”
She stopped pouting and started jumping again. “Yay! Then let’s go, Mister!” She started running in the direction I was walking.
“Be Careful not to fall.” I walked after her. The rest of the walk was her asking me questions about being a detective. As we crossed the road she held my hand. As soon as I said we were close she ran off looking at each store seeing if she could spot the office.
“Is it this one?” She pointed at one of the shops right next to the office.
“Nope, it’s this one.” I said as I walked past her to the office door unlocking the door. I held open the door for her and she skipped in with a smile. We walked up the stairs to my office. “Stay here alright.” I opened the door to my office and she sat inside. “Don’t break anything please.” She gave me a thumbs up as I closed the door. I sighed. Great, now I have to go tell my boss. I walked over to his office and knocked on the door.
“Elliot? Is that you? Come in!” You could hear the cheer in his voice when he spoke. He was always so upbeat even while working. I opened the door and walked over to his desk. “Ready for another case detective?” He crossed his legs. My boss was young, only a bit older than me. He had black hair and green eyes. He was always smiling and talked with an energetic tone. He was almost smiling too. I’ve never seen him not smiling. It almost disturbed me at times.
I sighed again “About that, I found this kid-”
“A kid? You didn’t bring them here did you?” Of course. He interrupted me before I could finish. He always did this.
“Yes. I couldn’t find the kids parents so-” I was quickly interrupted again
“So you basically kidnapped a child? You could get in trouble for that, you know.” He stood up. “Where’s the kid? Your office?” Before I could even answer he walked out and went over to my office. I swiftly followed him. He opened my office door and there sat the girl. She excitedly jumped up.
“Is this your boss, mister detective! I’m so excited!” She jumped up and down. You could see the joy in her face. My boss then crouched down
“I’m so sorry miss but Mister Elliot isn’t able to take you on his case. We have to bring you back to your parents alright.” The girl pouted.
“But- Mister Detective told me I could come with him until my parents came to get me!” She then turned to me. “You’re a liar!” She then ran out of the building. I was about to chase after her but then I heard my boss sigh and say.
“You don’t have time to follow a little girl. She’ll be fine. Besides, it's still morning. I’m sure someone will help her. Now you have to get on with your case.” He walked back over to his office to grab the files. He then walked back into mine and handed me the files. “If you need help just ask me.” He then walked back into his office and shut the door.
I shut my own office door and sat down in my chair. Might as well get started now. I booted up my computer and started filling in some information. I filled in the suspects and started scheduling some interviews that needed to be done. I then went off to examine some of the records. Where was the body, the layout of the area, the autopsy report. Everything I needed to help solve this case. After a few hours it was time for lunch. A bag was suddenly dropped onto my desk. I looked up and there was my boss standing.
“I bought you some lunch since you keep forgetting about eating. Don’t overwork yourself. You’re my only employee right now.” He sat down in front of my desk in one of the chairs that were set in front of it. “Mind if I eat with you?”
“No, of course not.” I booted off the computer. “You said I’m your only employee right now, did something happen to Scarlet and William?” I opened the bag and took out a takeout box.
“Scarlet’s away on maternity leave. She just gave birth. Will is on vacation. He needed to take a break. Did they not tell you?” He started eating his own food from a different takeout box.
“No, they didn’t. I don’t mind though. I like the quiet.” I took a fork and started eating the takeout. “Kayama wh-” Again, I was interrupted.
“Just call me Aiko. I’ve known you for years.” He said as he ate.
“Alright, Aiko, why did you choose to work as a detective? Did you always want to be a detective?” I kept reading the files as I ate.
“Oh? Wow, you want to know personal stuff about me now?” He said that in a curious tone. Sometimes I couldn’t stand him. “Well, some stuff happened in my past to push me towards being a detective. You’re gonna have to take me on a date to learn more!” He laughed a bit. He said it in a joking manner like he always did but it made me annoyed as always.
“Nevermind then,” I kept eating my food. I wished Will or Scarlet would come back soon. Not that I hated my boss, it’s just that sometimes he was a bit too much for me. I took out my phone to check it. It was 12:27. My shift ended at 7:00. “Do I need to do any investigations soon?” I won’t lie, I really enjoyed investigating. Even as a kid I enjoyed it.
“Hmm, not any today, however tomorrow you have one. It’s a case of domestic violence. According to the husband, he and his wife got into a fight and the wife started breaking things. The wife ran away so he wanted us to investigate the house to see if we could find anything on where she went.” He took a sip out of a bottle of soda he had.
“I see, well hopefully no one was too injured. Did they have a kid?” I asked.
“Yea, a daughter. According to the reports though she was fine. We might need to take the kid to a home though if the house proves to be unsafe.” My boss replied.
“Alright.” A daughter. I was reminded of that girl who I saw this morning. She said her parents sent her out to play didn’t she? Is she safe at home? Why do I even care though? I sighed again.
“If you’re worried about that girl I can do a background check on her and make sure she’s ok at home.” My boss always read people well. That’s why he even had this job. What's a good detective if they couldn’t see the feelings of people behind the ones they were showing? In a way I guess I admired him because of it. He was the detective I always wanted to be. I never would admit this though.
“No, it’s fine.” He simply just nodded. The rest of our lunch break we sat eating in silence. This is usually what happened. We’d talk for a bit and then the rest of the time eat in silence. It was like a routine. As an adult routines helped me stay sane. It gave me things to look forward to. I would never admit this either but I liked talking to my boss, to Aiko. Just sitting with him, it would be something I would soon miss. After our lunch break was over my boss returned to his office and I started working on paperwork. It was then the same routine as always, my boss would go home earlier than me then I would close. I walked back home. Past the coffee shops, the stands, the people, past the spot I meant that girl. I hope she was fine. I’d probably forget about her by tomorrow. I opened my door. I got dinner on the way home. I set it down on the table taking off my jacket and shoes. I sat down to eat. My apartment was pretty small. It was just a studio apartment. I liked it though, it was nice, cozy, besides I had no one I needed to share the room with so it was enough room for me. I remembered when I used to live with my boss since I didn’t have any money to get a place of my own. He helped me out a lot. I was really grateful to him, it didn’t mean he wasn’t annoying though. Once I finished eating I just took a shower before going to bed. I went to sleep earlier than usual that day. I was excited for the investigation tomorrow if I remembered right. It would be my first investigation in a while.
