Switzerland is separated into 26 cantons. Not only is that a lot for a tiny country like us but it also causes rivalery. Basel and Basel-Country used to be one canton. But in 1833 it split after a civil war. Any kinds of moves to unite the two again have been smashed before they could even form concretely. Just in 2016 we voted a clear no on that account.
