Where She Lay Astray - Part 1

Where She Lay Astray - Part 1

Dec 26, 2022

[Unknown]

Darkness, that's all you see. Are you asleep?

The voice of a woman echoed within you; she kept repeating a name that was familiar to you. A name that was attached to you. The woman kept talking to you, but you couldn't even see her.

"Inanna."

The voice kept getting louder and louder as it continued to speak, "Who will plow my high field?"

You wake up, the surrounding area is covered in mud, it's early morning, and there is no one out there besides you. Everything around you seemed lifeless.

You notice that you're completely naked and ask yourself, "Where am I?" as you don't recognize the area.

The only thing that you remember is that your name is Inanna, whenever you try to remember anything, it becomes fuzzy. You don't remember how you got to where you are or what happened at all in your life.

Covered in mud, you stand up. To you, it feels difficult to even stand up, but you felt the need to do something. Utterly confused, you attempt to move on by surveying the area. From afar, all you're able to notice in the middle of nowhere is a fort.

You feel as if the best decision to make at the moment is to head to the fort, there was nowhere else to go.

As you walk over to the entrance of the fort, you notice a corpse. The shock you feel isn't enough to keep you from going into the fort, your priority is safety from whatever may be going on outside the fort.

Once you get inside the fort, you notice that it is slowly collapsing and consider it dangerous. You walk out of it, almost tripping on the corpse laying out at the entrance. You're able to notice that the body has been there for a long time, it was barely a corpse at that point.

There was absolutely nothing ahead or behind, it was a deserted area no matter where you looked. But you had motivation, you felt that maybe one day you'd discover something ahead. Something that would keep you safe, something that would keep you comfortable, something that would give your life meaning.

So, you decided to walk ahead amid nothingness. You walked ahead with ample curiosity for hours, days, and weeks.

Unfortunately, a human can't survive too long without food or water. You're losing your breath, you can't continue walking in the middle of anywhere, your skin feels as if it's burning, and you pass out.

You started to feel all those symptoms all at the same moment, you don't know why, or how. You don't know where you are, or if you're even alive.

You don't know what you are or what the meaning of your life is, you just walked for as much as you could until your life gave out.

[Five years ago]

An elite military group from a town called Luitol had enacted a mission. The mission would be to cross a massive bridge called Choshire Bridge, the bridge's entrance has a gate, and the inside is within a dark cave. The bridge is expected to be long enough to take up to two days of travel.

That's all that is known to this date, the bridge was seemingly on the outskirts of the town, a deserted area no one lived in, and near a chasm that was big enough to split the town from the area.

As the elite group approached an enormous blue gate decorated with dragons and bulls one of them pointed out, "We're approaching the target."

The lieutenant of the elite group was called Lt. Libet, his duties were to lead the group through the bridge successfully. He was now standing right before the bridge the group was dreading for years.

Lt. Libet took a sip from his beer as he stared at the massive entrance leading into the bridge, "The one and only, Choshire Bridge. I'm here to guide you all to victory! We will gather information from this dammed bridge, and learn the truth about this world for once," Lieutenant Libet says as the military cheers.

One of the military personnel had come back from surveying the area, "It does appear that the cave is completely dark, we don't have proper light equipment to go through the bridge," he reported to the lieutenant.

The lieutenant had a look of disgust on his face, "This mission will be for naught if we decide to turn back now, please don't say such foolishness in front of me," he said as he threw his beer off the cliff behind him.

Lt. Libet lit up a torch and rushed inside the cave, forcing the rest of the personnel to follow him. The military had been told to be wary when going through the bridge, yet their leading man rushed in with no plan.

The elite group went inside the cave and found no trace of their lieutenant, the lieutenant seemingly disappeared in the mist from within the bridge, they didn't have much light to look through, so it made the task harder. Without a leader, their plans would be cut short, they needed him in order to continue the mission.

"Lieutenant! Where are you!?"

"We must stick to a plan, or we will all die. Come back!"

It has been five years since that event occurred, and none of the elite military personnel had returned. Luitol's mission to cross the Choshire Bridge was assumed a failure, no one had come back. No one knew if they died or went astray on the bridge, and neither did anyone know the reason as to why they never came back from the bridge.

It was impossible to look for any of them as no one even knew about the possible threats from within the bridge, there had been no previous attempts at even crossing the bridge.

A regular world, where all of humanity once settled, had the biggest war occur. A war that ended up wiping the majority of the world, a world once known to have many countries now exists as a mere vessel for three. All are located in different parts of the world.

The country this story takes place in is called Choshire. It's known to hold 3 towns, all connected by bridges.

The town of Luitol, the town at the south end of Choshire, usually has hot weather, but when it gets cold it gets very cold. The people who live in Luitol believe in pure royal blood; no common folk resides within Luitol.

The town of Kens, the town at the east end of Choshire, this town is known for cold temperatures and rain, and the fact that they despise royalty. The people who live in Kens believe in a single ruler, someone who will guide their future.

And finally, the town of Krester. This town is at the north end of Choshire, known for average temperatures across the year, sometimes it'll be cold, sometimes it'll be hot, and sometimes it'll be both. The people who live in Krester all work on their own with the assistance of Lyririe, the royalty that takes over half of the town, commonfolk are separated by a gate in their area of the town.

All of these towns have lived in peace for the past ten years, that's when everything started. The world has lived in mystery as no one in Choshire is really aware of what happened ten years ago. That's what the protagonist of this story is after, unveiling the mysteries of Choshire.

Finding the truth of Chroma Vile.

A young man, of average height, and average strength had assisted during the rebuilding movement in Krester. The movement was enacted by the royalty as the buildings were all pretty damaged, assumed from war involvement from ten years ago. For everyone, it's hard to understand when anything happened, since they aren't able to recall anything from ten years ago.

This young man is Enkita, he didn't have any particular strengths, but he tried his best whenever something came up. Enkita lived on the outskirts of Krester's common area, his house was on top of a mountain, and of course, he didn't live by himself.

Uli, an old-time friend of Enkita, lived with him. She worked at a care facility within the common area, and she helped anyone with any health-related issues, whether it be physical or mental. She was short, had silky smooth hair, and was adored by everyone who saw her around.

[Krester | Enkita's house]

It was a bright and sunny day. The morning sun shone brightly across the town, the sky was blue, and the clouds were white and fluffy. It was a normal day in Krester; although, winter was quickly approaching.

Uli yawned as she woke up, hearing loud banging on the roof, "This early?" she thought to herself. She stood up and opened the door to check what was going on, as she walked out, she noticed her friend, Enkita.

Enkita was working all day to get their house ready for the winter, his work wasn't the best, but he always tried his best. He put the hammer down as sweat dripped off his face and said, "I'm fixing up the roof, it won't last for winter if it stays like this."

"How about some breakfast? Maybe?" Uli said as she fixed her hair.

Enkita got down from the roof and went inside with Uli to get breakfast, "I know you've been working hard to fix our house, but we still have time to just relax, you know?" Uli said as she placed the food she cooked on his plate.

Enkita started eating his food, "If winter happens to show up tomorrow, or today even. What would we do? I want to relax a little and be with you longer during the day, but I want to protect you," Enkita said as he ate his food violently.

Uli looked at him eat her food; she was happy. While Enkita did his best to do stuff, it wouldn't go his way all the time, so Uli had to step in to fix things at times. Enkita didn't like relying on her, he wanted to be the person she relied on, but it wasn't that way a majority of the time.

As time passed, Uli got ready for work, and Enkita continued to work on the roof of their home. Just like any regular day, they went off and did their own thing. Uli would be going to her care facility job, and Enkita would work on their home.

Uli's face shone brightly onto him as she left, "I'll see you tomorrow, I have a long shift today," she said as she waved goodbye to him.

Enkita waved back from the rooftop with his hammer in hand and said, "I'll see you tomorrow, I'll be sure to work on the house as hard as I can so we can do whatever you want when you're back!"

Enkita continued to work on the house, "I don't want Uli to worry about me or look after me, I can take care of both of us just fine," he thought to himself.

Enkita would get hurt a lot while working, he would end up in Uli's care facility which made his case worse in many scenarios. He didn't want to rely on her, he wanted her to rely on him for everything. He wanted to be everything she needs.

Beautiful scenery can be seen from the house's rooftop, the entirety of Krester. In the town he lives in, he helped build a lot of what Krester is now, and he was proud of it. He stared at the city every day at night from his rooftop as the town continued to be developed for the past few years.

Regardless of what had happened ten years ago, everyone in Krester lived in harmony. Houses were built from wood, all designed by those living in them, some buildings started from nothing entirely built by Enkita and the people as part of the rebuilding movement.

From the rooftop, Enkita could also see Lyririe's huge castle surrounded by flowers and wildlife. Commonfolk weren't allowed inside Lyririe, so Enkita had never personally visited Lyririe's side of Krester but seeing it from his house was enough to fulfill him during his work.

"What happened?" Enkita wondered as he took a break from fixing the roof. Enkita started drinking water and thinking, "We've been living here for a decade, but we don't know anything about this world. All we know is that we need somewhere to live, we have no memories of who are beside our names. We have no real idea of what really happened here ten years ago. What would happen if another war occurred?"

Enkita continued looking at the town from above, "What good will it do if I just sit here working on this movement and this house, we don't even know anything about the other countries," he thought to himself.

Everyone in Choshire had limited knowledge of the world itself, but despite that, they still pushed on with their everyday lives. They believed that if not even the most powerful entities in Choshire could find something about the world, they had no power to do anything about it.

"Fate of the Choshire," a quiet voice spoke.
