You never know when you’re about to die. You wake up, check your phone, and maybe think to yourself, ‘Am i forgetting something?’ But that’s about it. No sane person would take that nagging thought as a sign of death. Surely enough, I was sane. 

Stretching his limbs, Yin Ying groaned, not-yet awake. A hollow rumbling overtook him as emptiness filled his body. Feeling faint as the light met his eyes, he immediately lay back down. In other words he was hungry. One minute passed, and then another, until he groaned once more and rose from his bed. Dragging himself into the kitchen, Yin Ying turned on the stove and put a pot of ramen on to boil. He sighed in exhaustion and collapsed onto the couch.  Closing his eyes he briefly thought, “What was it I had to do again? Three…no, four chapters of homework…Studying and finals and-” He groaned and kicked his legs on the arm of the couch before loudly exclaiming, “I just need a break!” His eyes shone with temporary motivation. “I’ll read a bit of that novel and eat my ramen, and then knock out some work!” 

Rolling over onto his stomach, Yin Ying took out his phone and went to an already open tab of a novel titled “Years searching for the God of these lands.” Years searching was a novel of a smaller viewing. With 108 chapters, the novel had a little over 26,000 readers and Yin Ying was proud to be one of them. One could say there was nothing special about it, making it like any other stallion novel but this was far from the truth! With mystery, tragedy, thrill, and even a stray beauty here and there, this novel ranked #1 in his heart! The author under the username, “Penguin days ah!” had only just posted the newest chapter, 109. Smiling drowsily, Yin Ying opened up the new chapter. Even despite the arrival of a new chapter from his favorite novel, sleep couldn’t help but overtake him.

“Huh?”

“What??” 

Waking up from his state of slumber, Yin Ying heard a voice? If you could even call it that. It was less of a voice and more…

…mechanical. 

Clearing its throat(??) the mechanical voice began again.

“What? That’s not-” he looked around before quickly realizing that he wasn’t in his living room anymore.

He took a deep breath and looked into the dark abyss that surrounded him before asking, “Where am I? And who are you? Am I dead??”

Yin Ying: “...WTF?! You killed me?!”

Breathing heavily and erratically, Yin Ying couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He couldn’t possibly believe it. He had only just been alive mere moments ago and now he was being told that not only was he dead, but it was his own fault?? 

“Wait! Ok, ok I’m sorry. Please explain? How is it that…I’m dead?”

Brightening up the system eagerly explained. [Well does host remember the ramen you had cooking on the stove? Well~ Host fell asleep and so your apartment burned down! Silly host~(>w<)]

“...” 

Silly?! Silly your mom! Silly your grandpa! Silly yourself! 

“S-such a simple mistake…is it really possible that I died from that?...”

[Ah? Why of course my silly host! But don’t worry, the other resident’s of the apartment evacuated the building safely~ Besides you of course!] 

The veins on Yin Ying’s forehead threatened to pop out any second now. 

[Oh host~ Please calm down…You are actually quite lucky! You see most people would immediately go on to what lays beyond this plane of existence after death but you have a chance at life again!]

“I do?! Please tell me!” His entire body brightened up at the mention of a chance to be alive again. 

[Alright then Zheng Ai will explain~] the system then cleared its voice once again [The host, Yin Ying, has been chosen as a transmigrator to go into the world, “Years searching for the God of these lands.”]

“What?! T-that’s!-” His blood seemed to be gushing from excitement before calming down momentarily “W-wait does that mean I’m going to be the protagonist?! I’ve read of this before in comics and novels! But…why me?”

The system laughed.  [Oh host is so funny~ No you will not be transmigrating over into the protagonist. You were most likely chosen due to your dedication to reading the novel even as death stood right at your doorstep! Host is so brave~ (≧∇≦)]

“Oh…” He sighed now calmer but still excited. How could he not be? This was his favorite novel after all! “What do you want me to do?”

[Host will be expected to go into the world and ensure that its progress reaches a satisfying end as this world’s ending hasn’t yet been written. Is host ready to receive this task?]

Swallowing a mix of fear and excitement he nodded. “I am.”

“This is it!” He thought excitedly.

[2…1…Have a safe trip~]

The world warped around him, stiffling his senses. Any intention to have a safe trip was ended immediately by a slap to the face. Literally.
