Daniel “Dan” Rushford and Max (formerly Maximillia) Rushford survived in the town of Cormac under the protection of Gertrude Fabert—the former mayor and current leader of the town—after a zombie apocalypse. Daniel is sent with a caravan to find another settlement and goes missing. Eventually, he returns to Cormac and discovers it empty of inhabitants and in cinders. Distraught, he discovers the journal of his brother detailing the events that unfolded during his time away. Through the entries, he becomes determined to find out what happened to the ruined settlement so that he can see his brother once again.
