Dragon’s Breath

Prologue

Prologue

Dec 28, 2020

Thousands of years ago, in the realm of the gods, lived a young goddess by the name of Alira. Alira was the goddess of war, fire, and wrath. Though she was powerful, she was also lonely, and held a deep jealousy; many of the other gods had created their own races that lived on the land Midgar, such as the fae and the elves, beautiful immortal races built in the image of their respective god.

Alira wanted a creation of her own. Thus, she made the dragons. Alira was very proud of her creation, as the dragons were everything the other races were and more; they were beautiful, strong, more intelligent than most, and gifted in magic, but much like their goddess they were filled with a deep burning rage.

The first dragons were born deep in the heart of the Southfait mountains. The smoldering heat that surrounded the mountain range helped the young race to grow. But with their growth came destruction, with each passing year the dragons became more and more wrathful. Their immortal lives only paving the way for more destruction.

The other gods disliked the dragons, for they were destroying the lands of Midgar. So they went to Alira and told her if she could not control what she had created, then the dragons would be removed.

Alira did not wish to see the eradication of her creation, so she devised a plan; she made it so all dragons had a soulmate. Their soulmate would be the only one who could quell their anger and keep them under control, but there was a catch: if a dragon could not find their soulmate by the age of fifty, then they would die.

Since the creation of soulmates, dragons took their respective place at the top of all other races. Dragons were able to hold the entirety of Midgar in their talons because of the many abilities their goddess gifted them. All dragons were gifted with the ability to utilize the natural elements. But some dragons who were believed to be most loved by their goddess were gifted with magical affinities that far surpassed that of common elemental magic. While the goddess may not have blessed all of dragon kind with magical affinities she made up for this blunder by giving those without affinities immense physical strength.

The thick armored scales that adorns a dragons body that shine in all colors are imbued with yet another gift from their beloved goddess, each color holding its own special meaning. Scales that are green and yellow, which shine like the dawns of spring, represent a dragon who is docile and level headed by nature. Scales of red and orange show a dragon who’s temper burns as hot as their flames. Dragons who are blue as the early morning sky are blessed with renowned wisdom that was marveled through all the lands.

Scales like the inky black midnight sky belong to dragons who choose to hide amongst the shadows. These dragons were blessed with a deep sense of wonder and a passion for adventure. Gray dragons who gleam like the ashes of a burnt forest posses a nature of mischief and curiosity. Dragons who glow as bright as winter storms possess a nature as pure as their scales but fierce as winter night.

Dragons with violet scales are a mystery unto themselves, for these dragons can take on no human form and were not created by the mighty goddess Alira. The mysterious violet dragon first came about only after the creation of humans. These small dragons, known as Miniature Spit Fires, were used as mounts for dragon slayers, for their superior speed gave them an advantage against other dragons.

The rarest dragons to walk Midgar are gold and silver dragons. These dragons are natural born leaders, and hold a commanding presence over other dragons. Dragons lucky enough to be born with these colors possess both a magical affinity and immense strength.

The first dragon king Syke, who created the dragon kingdom of Highmire, was a mighty silver dragon who used a powerful ice element. King Syke ruled for thousands of years without fault, until the day came that the dragons within his kingdom became unhappy.

In the kingdom of Highmire, dragons who were loved by the goddess and possessed magical affinities were revered and those who did not were looked down upon. The dragons who did not possess affinities were tired of this, and wanted to break away from the kingdom of Highmire and start their own individual hordes. But king Syke was against the idea. He wanted to be the only dragon leader. Other hordes would lead to him having rivals, who would want his throne.

With king Syke refusing to give in a civil war broke out between the dragons, causing unrest within the other races for fear of the mass destruction a dragon war would cause. Many of the other races, such as the fae, elves, and dwarves chose to side with the dragons who wanted to break away from king Syke, for the simple reason that they thought the dragons were too powerful united.

With the start of the war, the rarest race that lived on Midgar, the unicorns, came out of the shadows to put a stop to the mass destruction. The unicorns are known to only show up in times of great peril. They made efforts to put a stop to the war, but to no avail. The war continued to rage, wreaking havoc in its wake, leaving the lands of Midgar forever changed.

The mass destruction caused by the war left the lands of Midgar scorched. The hidden forest of the fae was destroyed, along with many of the animals and fae that lived there. This war cost the lives of many innocents and Warriors forever, changing Midgar as we know it. Kingdoms that were once prosperous were burned to the ground.

During the war king, Syke was killed, and the kingdom of Highmire was reduced to nothing but ash. Following the death of king Syke, the dragons split up, forming hordes based on their attributes. Dragons with affinities for time magic such as seers who could look into the future formed the Horde of Fates. Strength-based dragons formed many hordes, among the strongest being the Perilous Horde. And the unicorns were never seen again.

One thousand five hundred years have passed since the fires of Alira. The land that was once destroyed has since recovered, giving birth to many new and prosperous kingdoms. Among those kingdoms was the human kingdom of Samirya, which birthed from the ashes like a mighty phoenix, ruled by powerful dragon slayers.

Since The Fires of Alira one thousand five hundred years ago dragons have lived separate from the other races that live on Midgar. They rarely make contact with others unless in terms of conflict.

Eleonora is the descendant of the dragon sovereign, and will one day assume the throne of the Perilous Horde herself. The horde, despite years of murky conflict, forges an alliance with the human kingdom of Samirya located in the northern region. It is no longer a matter of petty bickering. Now, with the eve of a Great War looming over them, both groups lives depend on a truce.

As conflict thickens and land disputes grow increasingly more bitter, chieftain of the Perilous Horde makes a final desperate move to unite the two worlds: the dragons will send an ambassador to protect the humans capital city of Mimmgar from the oncoming invasion.

And who should be that ambassador be but Eleonora?

Eleonora just hopes to complete that task quickly so she can return home, but soon finds that the humans are nothing like she expected. Forming an unforeseen connection with the human king, and becoming captivated by a young blacksmith, she begins to question everything she's ever known and learns that her homeland may have some terrible secrets of its own.
