The door to the office opened and a young boy walked in. He couldn’t have been more than nineteen, tall and skinny with acne still scattered across his face. He must’ve been new since his hands were fidgeting and he was honest to god trembling. Cassandra almost wondered why anyone would hire such a child for a job like this. Almost.
She stopped herself when she remembered that most people would probably assume that she was only a couple of years older than him.
“M-ma’am, I was asked to – “
“ – Who are you?” She asked, cutting him off mid-sentence.
The boy was clearly taken aback, his poor brain whirring away trying to compose an answer to a question that he hadn’t been prepared for. “I’m H-Harry, ma’am, your new assistant.”
“Oh.” Cassandra certainly didn’t remember hiring anyone. She’d have to ask around about that. “I thought Daniel…”
“He was shot. Ma’am. Last week.”
Well, that at least explained where her morning coffees had been the past few days. “I see.” She turned back to her computer, before remembering that the boy had originally come into her office for a reason. “What was it you were asked to do?”
“Right! Right, I was to tell you that – that they’ve found another one..?”
If Cassandra been holding something, she would have dropped it in shock at that particular moment.
“Where. Where is she.”
“London, ma’am.”
“I’ll need you to make travel arrangements, I want to fly out by the end of the week.”
“Of course, ma’am.”
