Surrounded by an army of highly trained assassins, a cloaked woman holding her newly born child was badly injured, she who was defending herself against the assassins had already obtained fatal injuries.
“Cast the spell now” shouted the assassin’s leader as the assassin’s mages started to cast inferno, an all-powerful fire spell, a spell that conjures fire that engulfs its target until no signs of the target are left. On the verge of death and with the last ounce of mana she had left, the woman started casting a teleportation spell.
“My child, I apologize I won’t be able to be with you much longer, I hope you grow up to be an outstanding young man with a good heart, this is all I can do for you, I am so sorry, I love you”
As she coughed up blood the spell activated and soon her son vanished into thin air
“oh founders of the Empire, I beg of you please guide and protect my beloved child-”
As those words left the woman’s mouth she was engulfed by the flames of the inferno
The woman’s loud screams engulfed the entire forest until she was no more. As if the world grieved the death of the woman the sky turned grey and heavy rain started pouring.
“Our job is done let’s get going and report to the master” the head assassin stated as they all disappeared into the forest.
*** in a cabin near the forest ***
In the midst of the pouring rain and striking thunder, a loud cry could be heard from the cabin’s stables.
A retired mercenary who lived in the cabin had awoken because of the loud sound of cries. He got up and picked up his sword and decided to check out the stables.
As he warily opened the stables he started to look for thieves that might have entered his stables, as he wandered into the stables, his eyes landed upon a child covered in blood, crying in a stack of hay.
The mercenary soon dropped his sword and hurriedly went to pick up the child and inspect the child’s injuries
“Thank the stars he’s fine and he only has a few wounds that are not that deep”
As the man was checking up on the child a loud scream suddenly echoed in the cabin
“Oh dear gosh! What happened to that child”
The mercenary’s wife looked at the bloodied child in horror. As reality sank in, the woman came back to her senses and approached her husband and the child, she then started to check up on the child and hurriedly healed the little wounds that the baby had
“Who’s child is this?” Asked the wife while cradling the baby, trying to comfort it
“I don’t know either, the only thing this child had with him is the cloth enveloping him and this pendant on him with Kallistos engraved on it” The woman’s eyes fell on the pendant that was around the baby’s neck. The pendant shone brightly as the moonlight from the window hit it.
“The name on the pendant might be his” the woman told her husband as she inspected the pendant
“I think so too” the husband replied
“So, what will we do about this child?” The woman asked worried for the child
“How about we keep him?” The man looked at his wife with glimmering eyes as he suggested his idea
“I mean we don’t know who his parents are and based on the state the child was in, we don’t know if they are alive either” the man stated looking at the baby as he felt bad for the baby’s unfortunate circumstances
Soon the man looked at his wife again with hopeful eyes “We could adopt him, you know we have been trying to conceive a child for decades now and yet still fail… what if… what if he was sent to us by the heavens” the man added
“Well then I guess he is now our child, our little Kallistos” the woman says as she looks at the baby in her hands, and soon the baby stopped crying and started smiling and holding the woman’s fingers
“I think he likes that idea too” the woman stated as she started smiling with her husband while looking at the new addition to their family
As the rain started to settle, the mercenary and his wife gained a new child.
