Hello all! A few weeks ago under "Rise in the East," I posted character sheets for my new series. You got a glimpse of Darzsa and Josiah, and I'm happy to officially show them off in my new series, Give In to Me.
The setting is 1923 New Orleans, and with that comes framing this in how the world was almost 100 years ago. From the genre tags, it is obvious that Darzsa and Josiah's identities will come into play in this story. This is the Deep South steeped in Jim Crow and Prohibition, as well as homophobia and sexism. I won't shy away from them for the sake of fiction or appeasement, but be assured that there won't be any severely offensive slurs.
Before the story took form, I had a smart mouthed boy who liked makeup and pretty dresses stuck in my head. Eventually the plot took shape and here we have what is now a story of loss, love, and redemption. A lot of it will center around Darzsa and Josiah’s respective journeys to facing their pasts, but also the spiritual movement in New Orleans, which was founded in 1922.
Real life Spiritual, Leafy Anderson, founded a spiritual church in New Orleans after the National Spiritualist Association of Churches decided to expel Black members. I initially wanted to write a story around American Spiritualism, but after some research and finding more about Leafy and her successor, Catherine Seals, I had to bring more spotlight to a woman who persevered through so much adversity and thrived in spite of her circumstances.
Also, New Orleans is dear to me because I went to college there, and it’s a second home. I’m loving finding out new things about the city and sharing its rich culture in this story.

Possible content warnings will be mentions of past abuse and mental health crises. Those instances will be few and far between but will be properly prefaced.
Don't let the horror tag spook you! There won't be any monsters or frights of that nature. What lies ahead? Read to find out.
