I stood in my bedroom, looking out the window. The sky was mostly clear, with clouds moving over the full moon. Instead of taking the master bedroom of the castle, I choose this smaller room. Its position was much better located to get the best view of the turtle pond. How long had it been since I bought Belvedere Castle? 500 years? A 1000? At my age, time really had no meaning anymore.
I remember when I was mortal, the memories torment me every day. I was a baker before all this. I lived a hard life, but it was a simple one. A life with mundane struggles and pleasures. But that all got turned upside down when I pissed off the monarch of sorcery. I didn’t know who he was when he walked into my shop. I could tell that he was a foreigner just by looking at him, especially because he had those strange eyes that were the same as a stray cat. But I would not turn away any paying customer.
The man asked if I could make him a Japanese Cheesecake. I did not know what that was, or how to make it, but I needed the cash, so I lied. I made a regular cheesecake and told him it was one of the local spins on the dish. The man was completely fooled. He paid me and went on his way, or so I thought.
The next day, the man walked back into the shop with fire in his eyes with a deep, murderous scowl to pair with it. He learned I lied to him about the cheesecake. Above his head, there was electricity cackling above his head. “If there is one thing I hate most of all, is a liar.” The man said.
“I’m sorry sir, please I can give you a refund for the cake and then I can make you a proper Japanese Cheesecake.” I said on my knees in front of him, hands clasped, asking for forgiveness. “Please, I have a wife and kids I need to take care of, please I beg you, spare me!” this was also a lie. Clearly, I did not learn my lesson because his face soured even more and now purple flames erupted at his feet.
“You dare lie to me again! I am not making the same mistake as before I am reading your mind!” The man’s screamed exploded like thunder, sending me crashing into the counter behind. The man pointed at me, and a purple outline covered my entire body. “You are now immortal will not die under no circumstances. You can also wield magic to that of an expert level.”
“But why would you give me these gifts? I thought you were upset with me?” I said.
“Make no mistake, this is not a gift but an explanation of your eternal torment. I have sent someone after you and when they touch you, you will die. You will know anxiety like nothing you’ve experienced before. I bestowed them the same curse as you, and they desperately want to die. They will stop at nothing to touch you. Enjoy on earth.” The man said as he went up in purple flames. Before I could collect my thoughts, the front door exploded. When the smoke cleared, he was there. He stood right in front of me. In that moment, I knew genuine fear.
