This comic isn't about first love; it's about the complex effects grooming has on children. My story's written from the perspective of a gay tenth grader who wants to believe she's loved by her thirty-six year old teacher. This is Astrid's life through a rose-colored lens. She was afraid of Susan, so she romanticized her to cope.
Their real relationship was darker than portrayed in Astrid's retelling. Susan isolated Astrid from her friends. She made Astrid believe she was truly alone, and could only rely on her. This has been left out of my comic, as well as any weird conversations about sex. It didn't seem relevant to a tenth grader, who couldn't understand it. Women can be predators too. Even if they don't look like it on the outside.
