His hand on the railing tightened as he tried his best not to double over.

It was Neil.
He’d grown another couple of inches, now truly towering over Laszlo, honey-golden curls framing his face like a halo, twisting tan horns like a crown.
He was beaming at Laszlo, ecstatic to see him. Laszlo wanted nothing more than to throw himself at him, wrap him in his arms, tuck his face into the curve of his neck and not let go for at least an hour. Or burst into tears of relief. Or sink to his knees and have a panic attack. Really, he wasn’t picky."

Teaching magic at a prestigious university, Laszlo has left behind his less-than-fortunate upbringing as far as he will ever be able to.
He is dragged back kicking and screaming when Neil, his childhood friend and first love, convinces Laszlo’s closest friend, the elven historian Fen to join him on a dangerous expedition.
All Laszlo wants is to make sure she returns home safely and go back to his quietly miserable life, but the past will catch up with him in more ways than one.
