Zombies. Undead. People. Cannibals. Killers. Walkers. These things have tons of names yet all of them are the same thing. They used to be normal, everyday people. Every one of them do the same thing in the end and that is biting, scratching, and eating others that aren't infected yet like them. When this infection broke out, I was sixteen and had to “kill” my own parent and the twins. It was a great birthday gift I thought. Happy Birthday! We now want to eat you. I couldn’t have asked for more. Some may ask how I could kill them. It was easy. I took my Father's gun and bang, shot all four of them in the head. Did I cry? Oh, hell yes. The moment will always haunt me for the rest of my life but, as long as I am alive, they won’t be forgotten.
I would have never gotten to meet Alex and Sarah though if this break out didn’t happen. I ran out of my house and noticed those things were everywhere and eating everyone who didn’t look pale and bleeding from their heads or necks or arms or legs or whatever part that should not have been bleeding. Alex and Sarah were my neighbors across the street but, due to the age difference, I never talked to them. They told me the day that this all went down, they were throwing a huge college party for spring break. The party went downhill though when the DJ arrived finally coughing and then ended up ripping open Alex's boyfriend. She told me later she was glade that their relationship was over now and that she could go on the search again. I wondered what she was looking for though. Any man now, from what I have seen, was dead or crazy. Crazy could work for her though. She wasn’t the sanest person in the world but she’s on my side, so I don’t really care. It has been a week since the world decided it was going to kill everyone. Alex, Sarah, and I are now camped out in the mall's gun store, where we have heard other people camping in different stores around us. We could get in the gun store easily since Sarah worked part time there before the break out. She had the keys to get inside and the keys to lock us inside. Before we locked ourselves in the store, Sarah ran down to the food court and grabbed tons of frozen food she found in some of the back rooms. The gun store luckily had a small break room with a fridge and microwave. The power luckily still worked so we didn't have a lot to worry about much yet. The store also had a small bathroom inside the break room. We had everything we needed to survive in just one place. I just can wait though till...
“Hey Scout, what you are writing?” I looked up to see Alex looking over me. She grabbed the piece of paper I was writing on and began to laugh, “I am not crazy.”
I grabbed the paper out of her hands, “You know its rude to read others stuff.”
“Ah, come on Scout. You know how boring it can get. Anyway, it's my turn at standing watch. You can go in the back with...”
“Hey, guess what I just found.” We turned around to see Sarah holding up ammo clips, “I found these guys hiding behind the microwave for some reason.”
“Such a weird spot to hide those.” I said as I began to walk to the break room. I passed Sarah and added, “And shouldn’t you be getting some sleep right now?”
“Scout, don’t tell me what I should be doing right now. You’re the kid here. Now you go and get some sleep.”
I laughed, “Yes mother.”
“Hey, I told you not to call me that you little...”
Suddenly we heard gun shots come from the other side of the metal gate we had pulled down to lock ourselves in here.
“That sounded like it was right outside.” Alex said as she grabbed hold of her 9mm that was on a belt around her waist.
“Sarah, start to pack up the food in the back and Scout, grab as much ammo as you can with more of these little guys. There light and do the job well.”
“Right.” I said as I ran behind the counter and started to collect everything in backpack.
“Don’t do anything rash yet Alex.” Sarah warned her.
“I won’t. Do you really think I want to go opening up the barrier we have at the moment without knowing what’s on the other side?”
“You have a point.” Sarah then ran to the break room.
I watched as Alex slowly started to walk towards the metal barrier. “I don’t hear anything anymore.” She said as she slowly pressed her ear against the metal. I zipped up the backpack and put it on. It was heavy but, felt light at the same time with how much adrenaline I was starting to feel.
“Must have been a false alarm.” Alex sighed.
Sarah came running from the break room with a backpack on too, “Are they gone?”
“Maybe. I don’t know yet?” Suddenly we heard banging on the metal and Alex covered her mouth to prevent her from letting out a scream.
“Hey, I think there is someone inside.” A man said from the other side of the metal. He then began to knock on it, “Hello, we only want a few guns from inside. We don’t want any trouble.”
Sarah and I walked over to Alex who was backing away from the metal, “Maybe, we should give them a few and then they will go away.” Sarah said as she grabbed Alex's arm.
“Sarah are you stupid, we don’t know how many are out there. They could kill us once we open that door.” Alex replied.
Another loud bang came from the metal, “Hello? We are kind of in a hurry, if you will open this up now.”
“They could kill us if we don’t.” I whispered.
“Your right.” Alex sighed. “You guys go in the break room and lock the door. They don’t need to know about you guys.”
“Alex are you sure?” Sarah questioned.
“Go.” Sarah and I ran to the break room and shut the door behind us. Sarah locked it and then put her ear against the door. I did the same.
We could hear Alex open the metal up and we could hear the man again, “Thank you, miss. My men and I were running low and when we saw the sign out front, we thought there might be some things left.”
