Validating Beliefs

Validating Beliefs

Feb 04, 2024

A very typical day unfolding in a high school. Still, some time left before the start of the class. Most of the students were sitting in their places inside their classrooms.

Outside the school gate, some students were rushing in while running to enter the gate before the bell rang.

Some of the students were standing before a teacher, bowing their heads down while listening to his nonstop one-sided monologue about discipline, punctuality, student life and how he used to listen to his teacher's every word.

Amidst these incidents that were taking place as usual, a student was observing every little detail through the window of his classroom that was on the second floor, while silently sitting on his chair.

He was well-versed in this daily occurrence as he had witnessed the same scene who knows how many times before. For him, it was like watching a recurring episode of a drama every day with the same story and characters.

After some moments of observing these daily episodes, his eyes went beyond what was happening below as if losing their light, totally lost inside his thoughts.

He sat there like a statue, looking outside into oblivion lost in his daydreams until an impudent sound broke apart his mental fortitude and forcefully awakened him out of his thoughts.

"Alex...Alex...ALEX..."

The teacher shouted the name of a black-haired student who was sitting in a corner near the window in the fourth line.

The teacher was taking attendance of everyone but that black-haired boy supposedly named Alex was still looking outside of the window absent-minded.

It seemed much more time had passed as the Homeroom teacher had already been inside his classroom ready to take attendance.

For Alex who was lost inside his realm of fantasies, the time passed with the blink of an eye.

With the onslaught of loud sound assaulting his delicate ears, Alex stood up, heads down ready to defend himself from the barrage of glorifying appreciation of his teacher.

As the teacher started to appreciate this absent-minded nature of Alex, the whole class started to congratulate him with their laughing and jeering with silent insulting comments among themselves.

The teacher ignored those hush push between students and started the class resuming the chapter where he left it yesterday.

Though he never left Alex out of his vigilant sight preventing him from revisiting his dream castle.

As usual, time didn't stop for anybody. The class resumed and ended with a flick of eyelids(with a nick of time).

The moment the teacher left the classroom, students jumped out of their desks and sprinted towards the cafeteria along with their friends.

Some started to eat whatever lunch had been prepared inside their lunch box while gossiping among themselves about innumerable topics out of this world.

Various types of sounds and noises reverberate inside the once-silenced classroom.

As usual with his half-opened lifeless eyes, Alex stood up directing his legs towards the cafeteria for lunch.

His bushy bangs covered his sight, making it challenging to discern if he had eyes or not. He should have those organs as he safely reached his destination albeit with a pace slower than a turtle.

With the same deadlost eyes, he started to munch on the meals that were provided.

As usual, he finished his lunch. He was going to leave but something different occurred breaking the streak of as usual life he had lived. A group of four to five students came towards him.

Alex was perplexed by this incident. Some light was restored in his eyes that was lost but it was still full of void. He was curious to know why someone would approach him of all people but with the same indifferent face he kept sitting in his seat patiently waiting for some entertainment.

Other students were also a little surprised to see what was happening in front of their eyes.

The thing is this black haired Alex is an enigma in their school. It was unknown by whom or when it started but for all students it was an unwritten rule to never speak or meet him.

It was such a paradoxical thing as they insulted him, jeered at him behind his back or in silence among themselves but never confronted him. It was as if their instinct telling him not to awake the 'sleeping dragon'.

They can do anything behind his back but they should not scratch the beard of the 'lethargic lion'. Yes, those were his nicknames given by who knows whom.

So watching those ignorant group of deers walking towards their death, they were giving pitiful looks mixed with curiosity about their impending future.

Alex sensed those emotions coming from his surroundings.

'Aren't they exaggerating much?'
He halted his thought as the group of jokers... I mean living entertainment... No, I mean students reached his table.

"Are you black-haired Alex, the sleeping dragon?"

A young man with above average height along with a bulky but athletic figure asked Alex. He was at the front among others portraying himself as the leader of that group.

Hearing that overstated nickname he looked at that young man, his eyes still hidden inside slightly peeking outside of his bushy hair bangs.

"Yes, I am Alex with black hair. Don't know about that dragon thing though"

Said Alex pointing towards his hair showing that young man the colour of his hair.

Don't know for what reason but that young man felt annoyance after hearing that response mixing with that indifferent look.

"I am Simon. I will conquer this school and prove your legend nonsense today."

That young man named Simon said with a declaring loud noise echoing all over the cafeteria.

"Conquer! What are you a reincarnated emperor?"

Said Alex while motioning his body to stand up from his chair. Without mentioning a single word he started walking out of the cafeteria.

The group followed him.

A few moments later...
Alex with a slow pace entered the cafeteria then cleaned his plate and positioned it delicately on the shelf designated for it. After feeling satisfied he again moved towards his classroom as the ringing bell notified everyone the end of today's lunch period.

Bearing no emotion again as usual Alex kept sitting in his chair till all classes ended with the sound of the bell signalling the closing time of the school for today.

Students taking their bags started emptying the classroom with eagerness to leave the school premises. Alex also stood up from his chair and stepped toward the door of his classroom carrying his bag.

Leaving the school he started walking on the pathway along the road. After a few minutes of walking, he stopped to glance toward a store adorning various colourful posters of different characters. It was a video game store.

Alex loves video games. No not the games but the world inside. The magic, the supernatural beings inside. He loves that.

He has a belief and that belief only gets real inside those games. He believes in magic and the supernatural. He yearns for any magical power. Some may see it as an unhealthy obsession but for Alex, it is his life.

Alex as an individual is full of confidence and has sheer unyielding will and determination. According to him, he had seen magic and that's why he believes it but he can't remember where or when.

For anyone it would seem ridiculous. But his family although don't believe his revelation support him hugely. Alex knew what his family had endured due to this nonsensical belief of his but nevertheless, he could not discard his belief.

Today was his birthday. He reached 18 and his father gave him some money to buy his favourite game as a gift. That's why Alex was contemplating which game he should buy while glancing at that store.

At that moment something happened. His body started to glow. He had an incredulous look on his face breaking the indifferent mask adorning his 'usual' face.

Various calculations initiated inside his mind. He started to look around noticing the emptiness of his surroundings. The road was devoid of any living beings.

Meanwhile, his body started to float and vanished from that place.

Magically all other people again resumed their lives as if they weren't concerned about anything unusual happening.

Nobody noticed the anomaly that just occurred. Nobody noticed that a certain eighteen-year-old boy had just vanished from this very place they were walking around.

These people on this road along with others just skipped something that could never be comprehended with the help of science or anything that is known to the mankind.

Alex, a young man with an unyielding will, sheer determination and some disillusioned beliefs.

He believes in magic and the supernatural. Living in the era of A.I., he sure does have read many illusionary stories so called 'Webnovels' written by some of the weirdest creatures on the earth.

His belief in magic didn't come from those but it was so natural like eating when you feel hungry or sleeping during the night.

He felt as if he had witnessed magic somewhere that is what made his belief and now he had forgotten that, what remained only reminiscent of that grandeur of a name still blinking inside his mind.

Carrying the heavy weight of a weird 2nd-grade belief among peers whose minds were already above that fantasy, Alex didn't sit still.

With his will and determination, he did everything to defend his belief. He spent most of the time learning and perfecting every martial art available.

He studied every religious and historical book and scripture that was available to find something somewhere to fuel the blinking fire inside his heart supporting his belief in magic, a nonsense fantasy that could only remain inside a nonsense novel written by nonsensical creatures.

With everything prepared, Alex was only waiting. Waiting for the moment, when he could come out and proudly announce to this nonsense-filled world that only his nonsense was at least full of sense.

He was waiting waiting... until that day came...
