It was the year 2025, Lemony had just gotten home from school. She looked around and saw her dad sitting there and ignoring her as always. Her mom of course wasn’t home, probably at the diner working. She’d sigh and walk into her room and start her homework. She would spend hours and hours on her homework after school every day doing the homework from school and from her extracurricular activities like the math club or her extra math class. She would’ve done that if her best friend Melodie would’ve kept spamming her phone with messages. She finally broke and answered the text messages and called Melodie.
“HELLO THERE! WHY DIDN’T YOU ANSWER MY TEXTS?!” Melodie’s voice boomed through the phone.
“Well, first of all, I just saw you on the bus about 3 minutes ago and second, I haven’t answered you in the past minute…. You are so impatient,” Lemony replied with a hint of frustration.
“Ugh, that is just trash… I’m not impatient! It’s been 1 million years since you’ve responded to my messages,” Melodie would say with worriedness in her voice. “Is it your parents fighting again? Is that why you don’t respond to me??????”
“No Melodie, my mom won’t be home till I don’t know… NEVER!” Lemony spoke with some anger in her voice. She would almost hit the button to hang up but was interrupted by screaming coming from her living room.
“Oh wow, they are loud… I’m really sorry about your parents fighting so much. Do you wanna come over to my house to have some ice cream and do our homework??” Melodie said sounding hopeful.
“Sure I guess… I just don’t like to think that maybe someday they will divorce,” she said trying to hide her sadness. She hung up the phone and sneaked out the window to avoid her fighting parents. She would walk to Melodie’s house, when she arrived she was greeted by creepy smoke that wasn’t from a smoke machine or from smoking cigarettes. It seemed so mythical that it didn’t seem real to Lemony, but she believed it was real. She knocked on the door and the door opened like magic. As she walked in she noticed smoke slithering like snakes around Melodie’s mother Sallie. Then the smoke vanished as fast as she saw it and there was Sallie smiling at her.
“Hello dear! Are you here to see Melodie because she isn’t home right now,” Sallie said with a sly smile.
“Ummmm… I actually was but I guess that since she isn’t here that I’ll be going now,” Lemony said feeling intimidated. She quickly ran and started to sneak around to the back of Melodie’s house and climb to the window of Melodie’s room. When she climbed into the room there was Melodie sitting there, home.
“What took you so long??” Melodie smiled.
“Ummm… I think your mom is a witch…” Lemony said her voice shaking.
“No way,” Melodie laughed, “she isn’t a witch and plus magic isn’t real!”
“Or so you believe… I saw it with my own eyes, you don’t have to believe me, but I saw what I saw,” Lemony replied with a stern expression. Lemony then climbed back out the window to head home. Did she really see the smoke and the magic? Lemony thought about this for a while and realized the tingling feeling she got from the smoke… so it is real she decided. She walked into the front door to a pleasant surprise, her parents whispering to each other and not yelling and fighting with each other.
“Ummmm… honey could you come here for a sec?” Her mother Sammie asked.
“Yeah, sure! What do you need?” Lemony said eyeing suspiciously at her mom and dad.
“We have decided, and remember this isn’t your fault, that we are going to divorce…” Sammie said sadness and a speckle of hope in her eyes. Lemony would stand still, surprised with the words coming out of her mother’s mouth. She then would run to her room with tears in her eyes, she started to stuff all her belongings in her backpack. She didn’t have much because she would be responsible for buying her clothes. Her backpack contained her Nintendo switch, 5 sets of clothes with socks and underwear, an umbrella, her stuffed bunny, her hat, a mint green hoodie, 100$, an emergency kit, and some food. She would climb out the window and start running, since Melodie lived next door to her and Melodie was outside Mealodie noticed her.
“Hey Lemo…” she started, but Lemony had already run past her with tears running down her face and was starting to speed up. “Wait!” Melodie yelled as she ran after Lemony. Lemony then ran into Melodie's mom and ran away from her. Melodie’s mom started to run after her, but when she caught up instead of trying to get her to come back to her house, she touched Lemony’s shoulder and Lemony closed her eyes and after a few moments, she vanished. Lemony opened her eyes to see the galaxy laid out right in front of her and she realized that she was happier now because she could see the beauty of the universe.
