Chapter 1: A Child Lost in Time

Chapter 1: A Child Lost in Time

Dec 14, 2023

As the golden rays of sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, the soothing aroma of firewood filled the air, instantly awakening the small child from their peaceful slumber. Opening their eyes to the sight of a cozy cabin nestled on an enchanting island, the child could almost hear the waves gently crashing against the sandy shore just beyond their doorstep. The room was bathed in a warm, inviting glow, harmonizing perfectly with the crackling sounds of the fireplace nearby. The air carried a hint of saltiness, reminding the child of the ocean's embrace, while the gentle breeze whispered secrets of far-off adventures. Wrapped in the comforting embrace of the cabin's rustic charm and surrounded by the tranquility of nature, the child felt a sense of serenity that enveloped their soul.

This child had been on this small island for as long as they could remember, completely disconnected from the external world. The salty breeze permeated their senses, awakening a symphony of smells and sounds unique to the island; the sweet aroma of tropical flowers mingled with the tang of the ocean, and the distant cries of seagulls filled the air. The child's bare feet felt the rough texture of warm sand beneath them, grounding them in this peaceful sanctuary. Surrounded by turquoise waters that stretched as far as the eye could see, the child found solace in this pristine oasis.

Living in the cozy confines of their humble abode, the child could run their fingers over the smooth driftwood walls, feeling the history and stories carved into every grain. Despite the child's lack of knowledge regarding their own identity, they felt content in this harmonious existence. Loneliness was an alien concept, effortlessly dispelled by the gentle lapping of waves against the shore and the enchanting chorus of birdsong that serenaded their days. As they gazed out at the endless expanse of the cerulean sea, a sense of awe and wonder filled their heart.

This solitary life, devoid of societal conventions that often burdened others, allowed the child to embrace a simpler way of existence. They reveled in the simplicity of their days, nurtured by nature's abundant offerings. Their thoughts, untainted by the complexities of the outside world, embraced the purity of their present circumstances. In the child's eyes, this island was not a prison, but a sanctuary, a realm of infinite possibilities and boundless connection to the natural world around them.

However, what made their solitude less somber was the presence of a companion - a fairy named Erik.  The fairy, at first despised the child, but after years of hatred, he realized it wasn’t the childs fault, and his hatred was misplaced, and thus he grew fond of the kid. However, despite growing past his grudge for the child, Erik had never properly bestowed a name upon them, affectionately referring to them as "Someone" or simply "kid." The child was content with their life, and known not of the concept of loneliness. The calmness of the waves and the chirping of the birds, alongside their fairy friend was all they needed for company.

It had been this way for hundreds of years.

The child sighed, getting up and grabbing their fishing rod. They learned how to fish from Erik. Although erik is admittly very small, he was fairly strong for his size. He taught the child the most basic things he would need to know to survive. As the child silently smiled upon thinking about past memories he had made with Erik, they gathered the materials they thought were needed for the next part of their usual routine, and made their way towards the sea.

As they strolled along the shoreline, their eyes were drawn to the intricate seashells decorating the golden sand, a sight that never failed to captivate their heart. Even though this picturesque scene had become a familiar sight to them, its beauty never failed to captivate. A smile played across their lips as excitement bubbled within, propelling them to plunge into the refreshing waters ahead. The child's love for swimming was boundless, yet they couldn't help but dread the inevitable chill that awaited them upon their return to the shore, particularly given the thick coat of fur they sported that covered their body below their belly button.

Undeterred by this, they ventured deep into the sea, their net in hand, collecting treasures of the underwater world such as coral, clams, and other fascinating creatures. The child had long discovered their ability to hold their breath for extended periods, allowing them the luxury of delicately examining and admiring each item before gently placing it in their net. After a rewarding twenty minutes immersed in the depths, they resurfaced, shaking themselves off to minimize the wetness that clung to their fur.

After about half an hour of collecting and assessing little treasures and trinkets they had found within the water, they decided it was time to go back up to the surface. They shook their body in a circular motion, getting some of the water that clung to their fur and hair off. It was a trick they had picked up from reading stories about the world beyond the island. After basking under the sun for a bit to get a bit drier, they grabbed their fishing net. They like the fishing rod better than trying to fish underwater, because their fur weighs them down and makes them slower, resulting in the fishes being far too fast for them to grab.

As they fished, their thoughts wandered. They enjoyed their life, they were greatful for it. But…

As they sat by the tranquil shore, casting their line into the glistening waters, their thoughts wandered, much like the gentle sway of the waves. Life on the island was peaceful, something they embraced and were deeply grateful for. The smell of salty air filled their nostrils, intermingling with the earthy scent of the surrounding vegetation. However, amidst this idyllic existence, a deep yearning resided within the child, a yearning to uncover their true identity, to peel back the layers of uncertainty and reveal the secrets of their past. Within their young heart, doubt and curiosity coexisted, casting shadows of uncertainty upon their mind. They often found themselves lost in contemplation, pondering about their family, their roots, and their place in the expansive world beyond the island's shores. Yet, as each day unfolded, the child found solace in the constant rhythm of the waves, becoming their confidante, embracing the untold stories being whispered by the sea. The sound of waves crashing against the rocks formed a soothing symphony, their relentless persistence reflecting the child's determination to seek answers. In a world filled with uncertainties, the child discovered contentment in the simplicity of their island life, cherishing each moment, and finding happiness amidst the vast expanse of the unknown.

As they snapped out of their musings, their eyes caught onto something in the distance. Their eyes widened in surprise at the sight before them, as their breath stopped completely. In the distance, an unfamiliar object slowly came into focus. Perplexed and astounded, they racked their brains, struggling to comprehend how anything could breach the impenetrable barrier safeguarding their solitude. According to Erik, anything that tried to enter the waters surrounding the island would immediately be destroyed, due to a spell he himself casted to ensure their safety. Fear and uncertainty engulfed the child, causing their trembling hands to drop the rod that they were holding. Without a second thought, they sprinted back towards the safety of their cabin, their heartbeat racing in tandem with their footsteps. Panic seized their every fiber as they burst through the cabin door, frantically searching for Erik, their loyal fairy companion, to inform him of the eerie shape making its way towards the island.
As Erik hastily ventured outside, Someone, in a state of sheer terror, stumbled in their desperate scramble to find some form of protection against the unknown intruder. The world beyond their idyllic existence had been reduced to the confines of their isolated island and the magical presence of their fairy friend. However, the child's trepidation and fright were unmistakable, as their imagination ran wild with dire scenarios. In a heart-stopping moment, just as Someone clenched onto a meager wooden shovel, Erik's voice cut through the chaos, urgently summoning them to his side.

“Meedohla, meedoh lasodoh dohsola!” Erik yelled, urging the child to come outside.

“La mee, So’ meetee fa!” The child responded, affirming to Erik that they would be out right now.

When the child rushed outside, what awaited them was not a monster of some sorts, but was instead was a wooden boat. A lot of it was in pieces, but thats not what caught their attention. There was a man on the boat, a bright red headed man. The child turned to Erik, his eyes silently wondering if the man was still alive.

“La mee, doh faso meesosotee,” He assured the child. “Solatee… somee.” He sighed.

It took quite an effort to drag the man off of the boat, while the child busied themselves with preparing a change of clothes for him. The child was concerned that the man might fall ill from the icy seawater drenching him head to toe. However, before they could proceed, the ever-helpful fairy swiftly stepped in and whisked them out of the room, taking charge of that part. Upon carrying the red headed man to the bed and gently laying him down, Someone noticed that now that the man was dressed in fresh attire, no longer burdened by the grime and filth that previously clung to his face, as well as his previously tangled hair full of seaweed and sand now being freshly washed; the man was undeniably handsome.

Snapping themself from thinking about the appearance of the man, Someone couldn't help but wonder what thoughts that would soon be racing through the man's mind whenever he awakens within this unfamiliar place. As thoughts slowly cleared out of their mind, they embraced the comforting smells of freshly laundered clothes and the remnants of salty ocean air that clung to the room's atmosphere before closing their eyes and swiftly falling asleep.

The man was out for almost a month, and during that time the child was at his bed side tending to him. When the man finally awoke he woke slowly. He groaned, trying to sit up, before a  small arm accompanied by voice was put into his his peripheral.

“La dohla’ doh meetee doh…” The person said, pushing him back to lay down. Either he was incredibly tired or the person was really strong… It must be the former.

“Where… Where am I?” The man said, looking at the person. The child smiled, not really understanding what the man had asked, before they promptly left.
