Love On The Line

Prologue + Character Details

Prologue + Character Details

Mar 01, 2025

Sara Shiraishi wasn’t just having a bad day—she was having the worst day, like an overdramatic K-drama heroine, but with less romance and more self-inflicted drama. Her ex’s words still echoed in her mind like a cheap karaoke ballad on repeat:
“You’re so...extra. And materialistic. It’s embarrassing.”
Materialistic? Extra? As if she’d ever hidden her love for designer handbags, sushi nights, or the occasional overly luxurious spa treatment. Sure, maybe she’d hinted a bit too strongly that ramen was only acceptable when it was served in a gold-rimmed bowl, but that was normal, right?

Now, three cocktails deep at her favorite izakaya, Sara was done crying over the fact that her overpriced eyeliner had left her looking like a raccoon. With a dramatic slam, she placed her glass on the counter, startling the bartender, who wisely took a step back.

“That’s it!” she declared, wobbling dangerously on her barstool like a top-heavy teapot. “I’m calling Yuri.”

She fumbled with her phone, her vision a blur of neon lights and slightly-too-loud chatter. After several failed attempts to find Yuri’s name in her contacts—none of which were helped by the sudden urge to make her finger dance like she was on a Japanese game show—she finally hit the call button.

The moment the line connected, Sara didn’t even wait for a hello.
“YURI!” she slurred, loud enough that the elderly couple two tables over probably heard. “You will NOT believe what that jerk said to me!”

There was a brief, confused silence on the other end, before a deep, calming voice—definitely not Yuri’s—responded.
“I… don’t think I’m Yuri.”
Sara blinked, her brain failing to process anything except a mix of frustration and alcohol. “What? Who’s this?”

“I could ask you the same question,” the voice replied with an amused chuckle. “But since you’re the one yelling at me, I’ll let you go first.”
“I’m yelling because I’m mad! I thought I was calling Yuri!” Sara sputtered, slurring as though she were starring in an overly dramatic Asian soap opera. “She’s my best friend! And you’re—wait, who are you?”

The man let out a soft laugh. “Just a landlord. Name’s Daichi.”
“Well, Daichi,” Sara said, barely containing her eye roll, “you’ve just been promoted to my temporary therapist. Congratulations!”

There was a brief pause, followed by—surprisingly—a deep, rich laugh that felt like it belonged in a samurai movie rather than a wrong-number call.
“Alright, temporary therapist,” Daichi teased. “Tell me, what’s got you so mad?”

And so, Sara launched into a drunken rant about her ex, the injustice of life, and her undeniable desire to be spoiled just a little. Daichi responded with dry comments, making her rant even more absurd—because nothing makes a frustrated woman vent more than a calm voice on the other end throwing in sarcasm for spice.

Somewhere between her passionate declaration that “a girl’s gotta dream big” and her complaint about her ex’s refusal to buy her a real designer bag (as if fake ones didn’t exist), Sara realized something strange.
She was...actually having fun.
The call lasted far longer than it should have, much to the bartender’s subtle dismay.

“Thanks for listening, Daichi,” Sara said, her voice finally softening as the alcohol's grip on her began to loosen. “You’re not half-bad for a stranger.”
“You’re welcome,” Daichi replied, his tone turning unexpectedly warm. “And for what it’s worth, your ex sounds like an idiot.”
Sara burst out laughing, the sound surprisingly genuine. “You know what? You’re absolutely right. Maybe you’re the therapist I didn’t know I needed.”

“Maybe,” Daichi mused. “Or maybe I’m just a bored landlord with too much time on my hands.”
Sara smirked. “Well, landlord or not, you’re a good listener. Maybe I’ll rant to you again sometime.”

As she ended the call and stumbled into a taxi, Sara had no clue that “Daichi” wasn’t just some random landlord. No, on the other end of the line, Fujin Isamu—the cool, stoic CEO of a tech empire—was smiling for the first time in weeks.

Because what had started as a wrong number might just turn out to be the best mistake of his life.

The Japanese name Fujin Isamu can be broken down as follows:

Fujin (風神): This is a reference to the Japanese god of wind, symbolizing power, nature, and freedom. In Japanese mythology, Fujin is known as a deity who controls the wind and can be both destructive and protective.

Shiraishi Sara lives by one motto: Honesty is the best policy—though her ex might argue that's what got her dumped. Turns out, blurting out that she'd rather date a rich guy for fancy dinners than an emotionally unavailable man wasn't the winning strategy. Heartbroken and furious, she dials up her lawyer friend Yuri to rant—only to find herself talking to someone else entirely.

Enter Fujin Isamu, an aloof IT CEO with the charisma of a high-tech vending machine and the voice of a smooth jazz record. Isamu, who's pretending to be a humble landlord named "Daichi," listens in amused silence as Sara's unfiltered rants range from her love for luxury to her dramatic breakups. Despite his stoic exterior, her boldness stirs something he hasn't felt in years: Laughter.

But Isamu's family has other plans. Convinced their son is more likely to marry kabuki than a woman, they push him into an engagement with a high-society lady. He declines. His tells them about Sara being his girlfriend! So, what does a stoic CEO do next? He calls Sara, the woman who would probably marry a frog if it came with a platinum credit card, to pose as his girlfriend.
Cue fake dates, meddling relatives, and one hilariously awkward hot spring trip. As they fake their way through Isamu's family's expectations, Sara and Isamu realize that love, like sushi, is best served fresh and unexpected—especially when it's wrapped in a whole lot of complications.

But when Sara discovers that Daichi's humble landlord persona hides an empire of wealth, she's forced to question everything, including her love of fine dining. After all, as the Japanese saying goes, "Even monkeys fall from trees," and sometimes, love finds you when you least expect it-or when you accidentally call the wrong number.

Get ready for a rollercoaster of laughs, luxury, and love that might just make you believe in fate...or at least in the wrong number.
