Two things about Maze Inez Valencia's world would stand out as unusual to the humans that are reading.

One, magic, witches, elves, other fantasy species. All can be found in her world- and they always have. There are magic schools, flying brooms, and chimeras. Magical concepts and fantasy species will have descriptions and sketches to help better understand them.

Two, because of a yet to be discovered cause, the world has been turned into a dystopian wasteland. This world is stripped of its plant life, and there are raging sandstorms that keep people from the outside world. Fortunately, with the quick thinking of the witches, they created strong magic barriers to protect the remaining villages and cities. 

During Maeze's time, there hasn't been a complete solution. People do their best to keep living in their small borders. They try to do their best with what they have.
