“Don’t ever forget this day. Five years from now I will appear in front of you and you will regret the day you let me walk away” The promised I made before the person who made me feel every kind of emotion there is between two people. Today’s the fifth year I’m letting myself live through the past, present and future miserably. I took a deep breath and stared at the city lights, the night’s deep but I can see the sun hiding behind the night sky brightly shining.
“Everything’s ready for departure Ms. Hera.” Julia said.
“Very well.” I gave her a nod and took a last glimpsed of the city light.
This is only the beginning, Goodbye New York. New York had been my home for the last 15 years, I’ve learned everything and it had been meaningful. All the pain and sadness end today. I grabbed my purse and left home, should it be considered as my home when all these times this place only made me uncomfortable? I asked myself that every time. Since that day I became restricted with my emotions like as if I was living in a vicious cycle with just one goal, to make them pay for what they and he did to me. That day I promised myself that I’m only giving 5 years of my life to show them that I can be someone, someone who wouldn’t need anybody, someone that has a title for herself, someone proud, someone who isn’t naïve and more importantly someone who’s not stupid enough to believe in love.
Once I got on the plane today to set myself free from the pathetic Hera, that person is dead to me. I decided to change my name legally to Mira Kim, a name only one person can recognize. In my 25 years of existence I only trusted one person with my whole life besides from my parents who passed when I was just 5 years old. Who would have thought that one person who makes you feel like everything can also make you feel nothing at all? I scanned the whole section of this plane in first class suite, I wonder if these people are just as miserable as me? Guess you can’t really tell one’s story unless you get that connection, that cosmic connection everyone claims that’s real. Real or not it can only bring you sadness, being connected to someone is very toxic as humans are easily taken over by greed. They start wanting more, something they don’t deserve and will never deserve. This flight back to my roots is pretty long so I decided to turn my laptop on and send Maya a message, who decided to flew back to South Korea, a week before me to have everything settled.
This is my first time flying first class but I heard they have Wi-Fi in this part of the plane, I waved to the next flight attendant that passed by my seat. “Hi, do you guys have wi-fi?” I asked she looked at me as if I’m crazy, “Um yes ma’am if you’d like I can assist you to connect your device.” She smiled, I took a peek at her nametag and smiled back at her as I partially turn my screen to her and nodded. As she finishes up and test if the connection is running smoothly, she opened google and just my luck my picture is at the headline news. ‘Mira Kim new CEO of formerly known JWH Dental Association now MK Dental Association; New Yorker to return to South Korea on Monday for the first time! Everyone celebrates the new era of dental healthcare as young leader takes charge.’ I heard her quietly gasped and politely turned my computer back to its original position as she stood up straight to face me. She looked at me with a bright smile “Is there anything else you’d like Miss?” suddenly so politely, I sighed “Can I have a glass of red wine please.” She started pouring the red wine from her cart to a glass wine. “Enjoy.” She said as she hands it to me with a slight bow. Oh, that’s right people from Korea bow their heads for respect, guess since their Koreans they also do that inside the plane so even in the air there’s still statuses.
I sent an e-mail to Maya to let her know that the plane had taken off and to pick me up at the terminal once I arrive. Maya had been my friend since middle school, she moved to New York as an international student basically grew up in dorms most of her student life just like I did. We instantly became friends once we got assigned as roommates, she ended up being a plastic surgeon as I continued my parents dream to be a dentist. I checked the eta for the flight and decided to do some research about JWH corp, they are indeed famous in Korea. As I was checking their conference this morning I noticed the trending list ‘#1 – Jung Woo Hyun caught in another scandal?! Marks the 19th scandal in just less than 3 months.’ I felt anger takes over me, Woo Hyun you dare to have fun after what you did? Just so you wait. I took a deep breath and turned my computer off. The only thing that comforts me now is music, I grabbed my phone from my purse and set my playlist on shuffle. Feeling exhausted, I dozed off for the duration of the flight. The flight attendant from earlier had woken me up as other passengers are starting to leave, I gathered my stuff and fixed my blazer. As I walked out the terminal I can see a lot of reporters waiting for me and some other people waiting for their family or simply picking up their friends. I quickly scanned through the crowd and notices a big card with my name on it being held by a man figure but the face is covered by the card. Maya’s probably busy and sent someone to pick me up I thought. I started walking towards the man when the reporters started blocking my way and almost shoving their microphones in my face.
“Ms. Kim what’s your involvement with the Jung’s only son?”
“Ms. Kim was it true that he was your live-in partner in New York?”
“Ms. Kim what do you think of the statement Mr. Jung Woo Hyun made a few hours ago?” they were all talking at once as that left me confused on what it was about, flustered by the rage of the reporters I maintained my calmness.
“No idea about the matter. I’m not involved with the Jung’s.” I smiled softly.
“If there’s nothing between you why was there a photo being leaked all over the internet?” a reporter asked, I was about to answer “I believe Ms. Kim has to go. She’ll answer all of your questions at the welcome party on Thursday.” I heard a familiar voice, all of the reported turned to the man making way in the middle.
“Mr. Shin” I heard the reporters say, they stopped taking pictures for a moment. I smiled at Tae Oh and walked towards him.
“Glad you can make it.” He chuckled “Thanks” I said. I heard all the commotion from the reporters behind us trying to ask more questions about me and Tae Oh. Tae Oh is Maya’s older brother, although their only one year apart he is very matured and collected compared to Maya. He grabbed my suitcase from my hand and looked at men behind him and gave them a nod, they started walking towards the group of reporters trying to stop them from getting closer to me and Tae Oh.
“Maya had an emergency surgery with a patient so she called me to pick you up. Are you staying at your grandparent’s house?” he said as he looks at his phone to check the time.
“No, I got a place at Gangnam close to Maya. Did she give you my car keys?” I asked, he looked at me confused and intently and sighed moments after.
“No, she gave me a locker key for one of those besides the airport reception.” He explained.
“Thanks Tae Oh, or should I start calling you oppa since this is Korea after all?” I teased.
He rolled his eyes as he hands me over the keys. “I have to go are you sure you don’t want me to give you a ride?” he asked, I shook my head.
“No, I have my car at the lot anyways and I’m sure I’ll be fine using the gps, I have some stuffs to take care of.” I said.
He nodded and gave me a hug before he left. I headed to the locker area to get my keys, Maya had arranged this for me two days ago before my flight as planned.
As I approach my car from the reserved spot Maya gave me, I noticed a very familiar person leaning on my car.
“So, you really came Hera or should I say Mira?”
