This one’s pretty creepy, with reference to blood, so think twice about when you read it.
Your heart beats slowly, with every slow pulse you take a step, dead grass and leaves crunching beneath your feet. The autumn winds run past you, sending chills from head to toe, you pull the orange scarf over yourself hoping it would protect you from the cold. You sigh, here in these very woods, you think, staring at the looming trees; she went missing, 3 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago your dearest friend Mavis went missing whilst on holiday with you. You've returned to woods for one last search before you leave. You call her name, Mavis! Mavis! Still no response. Mavis! Mavis! You scream again and again, as you've done countless times before, every single day since she went missing, you shout her name until your throat is stabbing with pain, forcing you stop.
You look around. You're somewhere else, somewhere new. Great. You mutter to yourself. Now I'm lost. You look up at the sky, watching the candyfloss clouds fade away into the purple sea of the night sky, slowly falling into a darker blue. The stars are bright tonight, captivating, and beautiful. Perhaps the last beauty you will ever see. You hear a rustle within the trees. The torch flickers, you hit the back of it with your palm, it stays on but remains dim. You look back with the dim torch light but there's nothing there. You're quiet for a moment, hearing nothing but your own racing heart. You slowly start to walk onwards through tiger-orange tinted forest.
A feeling creeps all around you, as though you're being watched. It's nothing. You think. I'm just paranoid. You walk onwards, hoping the path would lead you out of the forest. It only leads you deeper. You look around and the trees seem to loom over you, they seem so much bigger. Have you really gone that far deep? Mavis! You cry out once more, perhaps this is where she was. Unsurprisingly there is no response. You stand there for a moment, staring into the thick forest. The dark, dying brown bark of the trees is all you can see with a few still filled with citrus-orange and brown leaves. There's a colour. You see a crimson red within the shadows of the trees. A wind passes and rustles. It's a bunch of leaves. You think at first, but step closer for a better look. The colour flickers and waves, it moves a lot like... hair. Hair blowing in the breeze.
How funny. You think. Mavis' hair is red. Mavis? You call quietly to it. It seems to be getting closer. Was it her, have you found your friend? Mavis! You say with a smile stepping closer as the colours take the shape of a person. Mavis. The figure repeats. It’s me! You say to it. It says the same thing back. Its voice sounded like yours but deeper and scratchier. Your smile drops. It wasn't Mavis that started back at you. It was you. The figure stood at exactly the same height and pose as you did and wore the same clothes, only more tattered and dirty with leaves and mud. Its skin is the same as yours but more pale and it looks bruised. However its hair was red, not crimson, but dyed with blood. Its eyes had no reflection of your own, as there wasn't anything there, only black and empty holes of where they might have been. Mavis. It mutters, coming closer. You step back. Mavis. Mavis. Mavis. Mavis. Mavis! It cries out. You try to scream but only a gasp is released, as tears begin to run from your eyes in fear. Tears fall from the creature's face too. Tears of blood.
It reaches out, long scrawny finger nails filled with dirt, bleak and grey inches away from your face. You move back. It steps closer. It touches your face. You're frozen in place. It comes closer and places its hand on your face, and strokes your cheek gently. Mavis. It whispers. You close your eyes as its hand moves to your eyes. You can't breathe. All you feel is pain. A stabbing pain within your eyes. Mavis! It screeches, taking your eye out entirely. You scream so loud, for even god may hear. It stabs your other eye and you only see red. Your screams echo across the forest. You keep screaming and screaming, never stopping. You feel the other eye being pulled out, more harshly this time, each vein being ripped out of place. You keep screaming, past the point your voice can even keep up. Mavis. The creature whispers again. You fall to the floor, unable to feel or think. You hear footsteps. You lay there for not even god knows how long. Bleeding out into the forest floor. You hear sirens. Then shouts. Then footsteps again. They come closer. You are lifted. You hear multiple men gasps and curses as they place you somewhere. You are questioned but unable to respond. You've lost your voice.
It's been many years since that day. Still no one knows what horrors occurred to you or your friend mavis.
But then again, neither do you.
No one knows what happened.
No one but you, and I.
