When I was in primary school, our teacher asked us a question: "What do you want to be in the future?"
The students eagerly raised their hands and answered: “Doctor!”, “Nurse!”, “Lawyer!”, “Movie Director!”, “Teacher!”, “Dentist!”, “K-pop Celebrity!”
My teacher then walked over to me and asked, “What about you, Sae?”
I looked up, still lost in thoughts about animals, aliens, mythical beings, and other strange creatures. Without hesitation, I answered, “Sloth!”
The teacher facepalmed, and the entire class burst into laughter.
Years later, when I was in Form 5, my friends asked me the same question: “What do you want to be in the future?”
I scratched my head and said, “Sloth.”
When I was accepted into university, my parents sat me down for a serious talk.
“Sae, what do you want to be in the future?” they asked.
I opened my mouth to answer, but before I could say a word, my mother quickly interjected, “Don’t say sloth.”
I closed my mouth and stared at them with a blank expression.
My father sighed and tried again. “Let me rephrase the question—what course are you going to take?”
I tilted my head, my mind now even more confused than before.
My father wiped his sweat. “How did she even graduate…?”
My mother shook her head. “Luck, I suppose.”
Worried, my parents suggested, “Hmm… Why not computing? We both majored in computing, so if you struggle, we can help.”
I nodded and applied for computing. Surprisingly, I survived my first year, even though it was full of coding classes. After three years, I finally graduated.
One thing I was absolutely certain of? I wasn’t doing coding. If I had to, I’d cry!
After graduating, I took a break. During that time, I had a strange urge to turn my chaotic life into a story. And that’s how this story came to be!
Enjoy! 🎉
