Chapter 1 - Samara's Fight

Chapter 1 - Samara's Fight

May 03, 2023

Samara's fingers danced across the keyboard, her eyes fixed on the computer screen as lines of code materialized before her. The 16-year-old from the Germantown neighborhood of Philly loved nothing more than getting lost in the intricacies of programming. Science and technology were her refuges, a place where she could escape the harsh reality of her surroundings and immerse herself in a world governed by logic and reason.

"Hey, Samara!" Maya called out from the doorway. "Your mom said you've been at it for hours. How about taking a break?"

Samara glanced over at her best friend since 4th grade, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "I didn't even hear you come in. Just give me a few more minutes," she replied. "I'm almost done with this program."

Her mind raced as she continued to type, her thoughts punctuated by the rhythmic tapping of keys. Her latest project was a program that would allow her to control her homemade drone with nothing more than a flick of her wrist.

As she typed, Samara marveled at the beauty of coding. To her, programming was like a symphony, each command and function playing its part in creating a harmonious whole. And when she finished writing a piece of code, she felt an immense sense of accomplishment, as though she had just completed a complex puzzle.

"Okay, I think I've got it," Samara finally announced, sitting back in her chair with a satisfied sigh.

"Really?" Maya asked, walking over to get a better look at what Samara had been working on. "So you can control your drone now?"

"Let's find out." Samara pushed away from the desk and stood up, stretching her legs. She grabbed a small, sleek black device from the shelf above her computer – her latest invention, which she'd spent weeks perfecting.

"Check this out," she said, sliding the gadget onto her wrist like a bracelet. "I've been working on this controller for a while now. If everything works as it should, I'll be able to fly my drone without even touching the remote control."

"Wow," Maya breathed, her eyes wide with fascination. "That's amazing, Samara."

Samara grinned, her excitement evident. She glanced down at the wrist controller and concentrated, willing her drone to lift off from its perch in the corner of her cramped bedroom. The small, quadcopter-style drone whirred to life, its four propellers spinning rapidly as it began to hover in midair.

"Whoa!" Maya exclaimed, clapping her hands in delight. "You did it! That's so cool!"

"Thanks," Samara replied, her cheeks flushed with pride. "It took a lot of trial and error, but I finally got it working."

As she continued to experiment with her new invention, deftly maneuvering the drone around her room, Samara couldn't help but feel a sense of isolation. Her passion for technology had always set her apart from her peers, earning her the labels of "nerd" and "geek" from classmates who didn't understand or share her interests. But that didn't matter to her; she was determined to pursue her dreams, no matter what anyone else thought.

Samara finally stepped out of her house a few hours later, as the afternoon sun cast long shadows on the cracked pavement before her. She pulled her hoodie tighter around her as she walked down the littered street. Although she was happy with her achievement, it was hard for her to feel joy. Her schoolmates' taunts echoed in her head like a broken record.

"Hey, nerd! What're you doing today? Creating another gadget nobody cares about?"

"All you do is read those stupid 'anime books' on your phone, what a weirdo."

She shook her head to clear away the unwanted thoughts and focused on the task at hand. A life beyond these rundown buildings and narrow-minded people called to her, beckoning her with promises of discovery and adventure.

"Ugh, just a few more years," Samara whispered to herself, "and I'll be out of here."

As she walked through her neighborhood, she couldn't help but notice the crumbling brick walls and dilapidated homes which seemed to symbolize her own confinement. The air was thick with the scent of grease from nearby fast-food restaurants and the distant hum of traffic served as a constant reminder that there was a world beyond these streets, waiting for her to explore.

"Once I finish this new invention, win the coding competition, and get that scholarship to MIT, I'll finally be free," she thought determinedly as she quickened her pace to the hardware store.

A familiar tinkling bell announced her arrival at Mr. Jenkins' hardware store. The old man looked up from behind the counter, his wrinkled face breaking into a warm smile.

"Ah, Samara, my favorite young inventor!" he greeted her cheerfully. "What can I help you find today?"

"Hi, Mr. Jenkins," Samara responded with a genuine smile, grateful for his kindness. "I'm working on a new project and need some wires, solder, and a couple of small motors."

"Of course, right this way." He led her to the back of the store, where an assortment of electronic components lay in organized disarray. "Here you go, my dear. Just let me know if there's anything else you need."

"Thanks, Mr. Jenkins." Samara began to gather the items she needed, her eyes lighting up with excitement as she imagined how her invention would come together.

As she paid for her supplies and headed back home, determination fueled her steps. She knew that she had the power within her to change her circumstances, to create a better life for herself and her family. And while others might jeer at her interests and abilities, they only served to strengthen her resolve.

"Let them laugh," she thought defiantly. "In a few years' time, I'll be living my dreams, while they're still trapped in this place."

As the sun dipped below the ragged skyline, Samara knew that nothing could hold her back from achieving her goals and exploring the vast, uncharted worlds that lay just beyond her reach.

After a weekend filled with testing, testing, and more testing, Monday morning was finally here. Samara begrudgingly strode into the school hallway, her backpack slung over one shoulder, weighed down by the latest gadget she had spent the weekend tweaking. The cacophony of laughter and conversation filled the air as students milled around, eagerly awaiting the first-period bell. She tried to ignore the whispers and smirks that followed her like a shadow, but their barbs still managed to pierce her thickening skin.

"Hey, look, it's the mad scientist!" one boy jeered as he nudged his friend, both of them snickering at Samara's expense.

"Watch out, she might zap you with her weirdo disease!" another girl chimed in mockingly.

Samara kept her head down and quickened her pace, stifling the sting of tears threatening to well up in her eyes. She knew that her technical skills set her apart from her peers, but she couldn't help feeling isolated by their cruel jabs. As she rounded the corner, she collided with Maya, spilling the contents of her backpack onto the grimy linoleum floor.

"Sam, are you okay?" Maya asked concern etched on her face as she bent down to help gather the scattered components.

"Fine," Samara muttered, trying to suppress her frustration. "Just tired of being the school freak."

"Hey, don't let those jerks get to you." Maya carefully picked up a tiny circuit board, her fingers deft at avoiding any damage. "You're amazing, you know that? People just don't understand what you can do."

"Sometimes I wish I was just like everyone else, you know?" Samara sighed, her voice barely audible amidst the din of the passing students. "I'm tired of always being on the outside looking in."

"Sam, listen to me." Maya's tone was firm, unwavering. "You have a gift that most people can only dream of. You don't need their approval to be happy. Besides, we've got each other, right?" Maya said with a smile as she touched her shoulder.

Samara managed a weak smile as she nodded, grateful for her friend's support. "Yeah, you're right. It's just hard sometimes."

"Trust me, I know," Maya agreed, her eyes flicking to the side as a group of students laughed loudly nearby. "But you've got big dreams, and I believe in you."

"Thanks, Maya," Samara said, her voice cracking with emotion. "I just wish I could fast-forward through all this and get to where I'm supposed to be."

"Hey, one day at a time." Maya squeezed her friend's arm reassuringly. "And when you're out there changing the world, just remember who always had your back."

Samara let out a soft laugh, the heaviness in her chest lifting ever so slightly. "I won't forget, I promise. But you're acting like you won't be outta here yourself."

"That's facts," Maya said laughing as they walked down the hall towards their first class. "But I ain't going to MIT though."

"Girl, MIT, Penn State, shoot, University of New Mexico, I'll take whatever comes my way," Samara said as she settled into her seat. "Just as long as it's away from here. Who knows, maybe, we'll end up at the same place?"

Samara's fingers danced across the keyboard as lines of code filled the computer screen. The rhythmic tapping echoed through the cramped apartment, mingling with the faint sounds of her mother's weary sighs and her stepbrother's cartoons drifting in from the living room. Samara's brow furrowed in concentration; she wouldn't let her family down. They needed her, and this upcoming coding competition was her chance to make a difference and get one step closer to MIT.

"Samara!" her mom called from the other room, her voice strained. "Could you help your brother with his homework?"

"Sure, just give me a minute," Samara replied, saving her progress before turning her attention to the task at hand.

Her stepbrother looked up at her with wide eyes filled with gratitude, and she couldn't help but smile at him. "What do you need help with?" Samara asked, pulling up a chair next to him.

"It's math," he groaned, pushing the textbook toward her. "I don't get it."

"Well you're just in luck," Samara replied as she sat down in the chair. "I happen to be a math magician."

"Really?" her stepbrother replied his eyes big as pie.

"Yup, and I'll help turn you into one too." Samara went through the problems with him, explaining each step carefully until he understood.

"Thanks, Samara. You're the best," he said, giving her a hug.

"Anytime, kiddo," she replied, ruffling his hair affectionately. "Now go get ready for dinner."

As her stepbrother scampered off to his room, Samara turned back to her computer, her mind racing with ideas. This coding competition was her ticket out of there, and she was determined to win it. She knew that her invention had the potential to catch the attention of some of the judges, and with the right exposure, she could make a name for herself.

The next few weeks were a blur of coding, testing, and tweaking. Samara worked tirelessly, pouring her heart and soul into her invention. Her family supported her as best they could, but they couldn't fully understand the drive that propelled her forward.

Finally, the day of the competition arrived. Samara's stomach churned with nervous energy as she made her way to the venue. The air was thick with the anticipation of the other contestants, each one vying for the top prize.

As she set up her display, Samara couldn't help feeling a twinge of self-doubt. What if her invention wasn't good enough? What if she had missed something crucial in her coding? But she pushed those thoughts aside, reminding herself of all the hard work she had put in.

The judging began, and one by one, each contestant presented their inventions. Samara watched with a mix of admiration and envy as some of the other contestants wowed the judges with their flashy creations.

Finally, it was her turn. Samara took a deep breath and stepped up to the podium, her nerves almost getting the best of her.

She began to speak, her voice shaking slightly at first but growing stronger as she gained momentum. She explained the concept behind her invention, the hours of coding and testing, and the thought process behind every line of code. And the real-world impact it could have.

As she finished her presentation, her heart pounding in her chest, the judges sat in silence for what felt like an eternity. Finally, one of them spoke.

"Samara, this is truly impressive. You've taken a complex problem and solved it in a way that is both innovative and practical. We believe that your invention has the potential to change the tech industry for the better."

Samara couldn't believe what she was hearing. All her hard work, all those long hours and sleepless nights, had paid off. She had done it.
As the judges finished providing their feedback and started to deliberate on the winners, Samara felt a sense of peace wash over her. No matter what happened next, she knew that she had given it her all. And that was enough.

Samara searched amongst the crowd looking for Maya, her mom, and her stepbrother. Spotting them she maneuvered through the crowd to meet them."Samara, that was incredible! You were amazing up there," Maya exclaimed, pulling her friend into a tight embrace.

"I can't believe it," Samara said, her voice trembling with emotion. "I never thought I would feel so confident up there."

"You did that, Samara!" her mom shouted, her eyes shining with pride. "We're so proud of you."

Samara's stepbrother beamed up at her. "I knew you could do it, sis."

As they hugged and congratulated her, Samara felt a sense of belonging that she had never experienced before. She realized that she didn't need to be like everyone else to be accepted. Her gift, her passion, made her unique, and that was something to be celebrated.

She turned her attention back to the stage where the judges were completing their internal discussion. Samara's heart felt like it was going to jump out of her body as they announced the second and third-place winners.

Feeling anxious, Samara grabbed Maya's hand and squeezed for dear life as the first-place winner was announced.

"And the winner of the annual Clarence Coding Competition is...Samara..." Samara didn't even hear the rest of the words as she felt a wave of euphoria wash over her. She had done it. She had actually done it.

As Samara stepped on stage to claim her award, a large tremor shook the building. Lights flickered, and the crowd gasped as they looked around in confusion. Samara felt a strange sensation run through her body, almost like an electric current.

The tremor grew stronger, and soon it felt like the ground below them was shaking. The lights flickered again, and a loud buzzing filled the air. Suddenly a blinding light shot out from the center of the stage. Samara stood transfixed as a beam of energy surrounded her.

Blinking rapidly, Samara tried her best to find her friends and family amongst the panic, however, she was unable to move or speak. It was at that moment that a loud voice boomed through the air, "The selection process has been completed! The convergence will now begin."
