This is really good. Wow. The colour change on the line “But he’s a fool.” is so jarring, and the emphasis really adds onto the story, and our expected view of the character. I love the language you use; the transition from question to exposition is smooth, and the simplicity makes everything so much more vague. We get the feeling that there is way more to the characters than we are told, and not to judge them so easily. And the way you build our main character without even a line of dialogue tells us a lot about how much work you put into it. It’s a really good play on actions and events speaking louder on words, but we’re more careful to assume now, and judge someone for their past. This is great.
