My name is Asheem. Let's just say I’m different. I never really knew my biological parents because I was abandoned at an early age. I was put up for adoption and luckily a baker took me in. His name was Kevin ; I just called him Kev. I had a great life; I was homeschooled , and always got fresh-baked goods. Sadly this fantasy life of mine ended and turned into a sad lonely tale per say. All turned around for the worst when I was 17 , the day after my birthday; the baker,Kev,passed away. I was really out of sorts when it happened; I ran away and grabbed the spare money Kev had left behind because I couldn’t stay where I was. Goodbye old home; hello forest I seek to stay in. There luckily , I did find a home. For I found an abandoned mansion sitting all alone. I had nowhere to stay, in the town it was just me and the baker , always. Now he is gone, so now my new life starts. I go inside , through a window, and lay down on the cold emptiness. To me it was better than the wet grass.
Next thing I knew, I woke up to the sun blinding me from the window. I get up and go out the same way I came. I go and walk around the woods. I luckily found some berries;I was hungry so I was glad I found them. As I walk around I find all kinds of things: rusted nails, glass bottles , and even a rusted hammer. I keep these things and put them in the mansion. Later, I’ll go for a walk ;however, I’ll go at night because then there should be less people. I have a desire to make friends but how would I fit in ; for, a monster surely can not fit in. As I think about this I search the mansion. As I walk around I find all types of things in there as well: an old bed , a torn-up red couch , broken glasses , shattered plates, and a faded blanket. All of these I put down stairs besides the bed but I could just sleep on the couch from now on since it was already down there. It grows darker outside; I must have spent a lot of time exploring. I’ll explore more of the forest , and this old mansion tomorrow. As of now I’ll take a night stroll and try my best to blend in with this darkness. Then I’ll return to have my slumber, to wake up and start all over again.
356 days later
I wake up, ready for what might come my way. Today, I’ll go for a stroll now instead of at night. Besides, what could happen this early. I go back to the town for a little stroll ;maybe I can find some food. I was looking down at the old , gray sidewalk as I strolled through the neighborhood. It's a small town; even though there is a city not far away. Kev would always talk about it , it makes me wonder if maybe I could go there. Then, I think about my face, my face, the only thing that traps me from society. My face, the only thing that marks me as a monster. I have one eye that is pure black , and the other is blue , a light but deep blue. It kinda reminds me of a cat eye. I look up and draw myself from my thoughts. I then ran into a group of people by accident. I must have been in a daze. I look up at these people , I'm on the ground , how embarrassing. They look about my age. The tall one turned to me and apologized;even though it was my fault after all. His voice was deep but at the same time filled with kindness. He helps me up and introduces me to the others. Friends , I think. Am I making friends?
I learned that the tall one ,that helped me up, is Caspian. He asked to call him Cas for short. He then turned to a thin, tan pretty girl.
“Her name is Layla,” he said, pointing to the girl.
I nervously pointed to a person in a hood, and asked, “Who is this?”
A deep ,scratchy voice came from the hooded person, “My name is Jax.”
Cas nodded and turned to me with a look of curiosity.
“You haven’t told us your name yet sir,” he spoke out of curiosity.
I nodded , for I have realized that I have indeed forgotten to introduce myself.
“My name is Asheem, but you can call me Ash,” I said as I looked at the three of them.
They nodded ,and for a moment there was an awkward silence. I was about to leave and say farewell to them ,but to my surprise as I turned Layla grabbed my arm to stop me.
She spoke so softly as almost a whisper, “You seem nice, sir. Would you like to hang out with us?”
I was shocked but happy at the same time. I think this is my first time anyone asked me this. This is the first time I think I met anyone besides Kev. This is the first time I think I have made any friends.
“Thank you. And that would be nice if you guys don’t mind having me around,” I looked over at the other two as they nodded their heads.
Jax took off his hood , and for the first time I could see his face. He gives me a friendly grin and turns and continues on their walk.
“Alrighty then, come on then. If we’re going to hang out might as well go somewhere,” he said sarcastically, signing for us to follow.
The rest of us looked at each other with a hint of wonder and then jogged up to join Jax. A long needed adventure ahead, and one that I feel I needed. One that will serve me a good purpose and that I can learn from. One that will give me new things to experience, and one that will help me discover my true self.
