The following report was taken from an old notebook. It was found in the summer of 2022 in a house that had been empty for a long time. Its origin is unclear, the identity of the author is unknown.
……. what is happening is too strange and disturbing for me to understand. But I will try to write down everything that happened to me. Maybe there is someone else in the world who reads it and can do something with it. There should be enough time, I hope.
I'm not sure how much time has passed, hours or days, maybe even weeks or months. But I woke up after a restless night and everything was different. Everything had been the same as always the night before, I came from the office, made myself dinner, watched a movie and then went to sleep.
As so often, I had trouble falling asleep, but this evening it was different than usual. Several times during the night I felt asleep but still awake at the same time, felt ripped from my body. I don't know how else to put it.
After what felt like an eternity, I finally woke up. Strange light shone past the curtains into the room. It was diffuse, cold, made me think of something dead, long gone. As I slowly became awake, I got more and more the feeling that something wasn't right at all. After a moment I got out of bed, went to the window and pushed the curtains aside. And what I then saw shocked me deeply!
Where there had been lawns, trees, cars and other signs of life yesterday, there was nothing now. The ground was bare brown earth, the roads and paths consisted only of loose chunks of asphalt. The houses were windowless ruins, without roofs or doors. No one was anywhere to be seen, nor were there any birds or other animals. Everything was lifeless, the barely visible sun gave off little light and warmth. I was completely surprised by this sight, I still am. I rubbed my eyes, thinking I was dreaming. I turned to my bed. My bedroom looked the same as last night, with one exception. The alarm clock on the nightstand was dead, as was my cell phone next to it. Not only did it simply have no reception, it was completely dead. The sockets and the ceiling light also didn't work. I looked out the window again, and then I finally realized I was wide awake. This wasn't a dream! After this realization my head was spinning and I had to lie down.
I don't know how long I lay on the bed before I got over the shock. I had lost all sense of time. It was still light outside. Either a very short time or a whole day had passed, I couldn't tell. After a moment, I decided to get to the bottom of it. To stay here on my bed wouldn't get me anywhere either. So I put on my clothes from the day before and went exploring.
The first obstacle, however, was already waiting behind the bedroom door. A mound of dirt had piled up behind it almost to head height, and a good chunk of dirt slid toward me as I opened the door into the room. I dug enough dirt out of the way until there was enough room to get into the hallway. Or what was left of it. The entire outer wall had collapsed and I could see straight into the courtyard. Where the heap of earth came from was inexplicable to me, at first I thought of wind drifts. But then I realized that there was absolutely no wind outside, there was no movement in the cool air. Oddly, though, there was a noise that sounded like a gust of wind rushing through treetops, even though there were no trees left.
I carefully climbed down the pile of stones that used to be the hallway wall into the yard and began to look around. I walked slowly around the apartment building, looking into the windows. All the windows were shattered and the rooms beyond seemed completely empty, at least as far as I could see inside. As I approached what was left of the road, I saw heaps of rusting metal that, to my imagination, might once have been cars. I also saw now that all that was left of the trees along the road were broken, short stumps. What I saw made me more and more nervous. What happened? And how could it have happened overnight?
The sound of the wind seemed to increase very slowly, as if it were getting closer. I also now heard a whisper, as if from a thousands soft voices. I kept walking along what was left of the road. But nothing changed. Empty ruins, tree stumps, rubble from former walls. Not a soul was to be seen, not an animal, not a bird, nothing!
For a while, maybe half an hour, I walked down the old street without seeing a change. Then I got another problem: I got hungry and thirsty! There was no sign of food or water anywhere. I tried desperately to remember if I still had anything to eat in my bedroom, the only part of my apartment left. I did not know it. While I was still thinking, something changed. Suddenly a wind started blowing from the direction the old road was leading. Very weak at first, but then it slowly gained weight, bringing with it an unspeakable, unpleasant smell. The wind that had been heard before also increased even more, and the whispering became louder.
I decided to return to the remains of my apartment. I walked faster and faster, feeling a growing threat. It felt like forever and I was afraid I wouldn't find it again, but then I saw my bedroom window, the only one around that had a pane left. I walked around the house to get back to what was left of the hallway, looking back the way I was coming. Then I froze in shock! On the horizon I saw a big cloud of dust and in it I saw movement, a big drifting mass. I more or less shook off my shock and climbed back up the pile of dirt to my bedroom. I pushed the door shut and heaved the dresser in front of it.
I found neither food nor water in my room. I never had anything to drink by the bedside, which I now regretted. But I found an old notebook and a pen, with which I write down all this now.
According to my calculations, today is Tuesday, July 23, 2035. The rustling and whispering has become unbearably loud in the meantime, the wind has also become stronger and stronger. Just now I dared to look out of the window. I would rather not have done that, because I could see things in the onrushing mass that shook me deeply. I will not try to describe them, it is too terrible. I have no idea what to expect.
..............hopefully someone will find these notes............
............the whole house is shaking!...................
This is where the report ends, only at the bottom of the page it says, barely legible:
They are here!
