“It’s not that I don’t want to go, I’m just not really in a party mood, you know? It’s more of watching stuff from 30 years ago, you know? History things. History mood.”
“No I get you, so why can’t you tell Ray? He’s not gonna get mad at you for not wanting to party.”
“I knoooow, but you know.”
“Why don’t you just hang in your room like you’re doing right now?”
“I could, but I would feel guilty. It’s easier said than done for me.”
“Alright, lemme know how it goes.”
“Okay, bye bye.”
“Bye Jackie!”
*Beep*
There sits a girl on her bed on her laptop and her phone. She had just finished talking to one of her dad and brother’s friends. Her name is Jackie. She sighs as she goes from the phone app to the messages app on her phone to text her other friends. She pulls up a chat between her and the name ‘pearl’.
starlight: heyyyy aniii
pearl: sup jackieeee
starlight: do yall wanna just chill up in my room during the party- i’m not in mood for boogie
pearl: how so- i’m chill with so- but curious
starlight: you know
pearl: alrighty, i’ll ask the others- you still coming over today for movie night?
starlight: yeah duh
pearl: oki see you laterrrr
starlight: you toooo
Jackie smiled, turning off her phone and laying back on her bed. Looking up at her ceiling was some painted glow in the dark stars that were in the shapes of constellations. There were also string lights with some polaroids clipped in random places on the rope. “Get up. Move your ass and get up!” Jackie told herself, laughing at the end. She swung herself up and stretched, putting her phone at the bottom of the bed and getting up from the bed to get dressed. Once she did, she grabbed a tote bag which had a faded design of a band logo. She put her phone, her laptop, their respective chargers and a couple more bits and bobs to bring with her. She put her hair in a low ponytail before turning off the lights and leaving her room, closing the door behind her.
She moved through the hallway, walked down the stairs that also had string lights on the railing then got to the bottom floor, walking into the kitchen. There on his respective laptop was Jackie’s dad. His name was Ray. He didn’t look like he could be her dad but he was. She was his adoptive daughter and he was her adoptive dad. “Hey dad.” Ray looked up and gave her a bright smile. “Hey sweetie, are you heading to the foster home now?” He asked kindly. “Yup. Is it alright if tomorrow, me and the girls chill up in my room?”
Jackie asked nonchalantly but there was a hint of nervousness at the end. “I don’t see why not. I’ll bring you some food in case you don’t come down.”
“Thanks dad. I’ll try to come down for a bit.”
“Okay!” Jackie walked over to Ray and gave him a hug. “I’ll text you when I’m at the place.” Ray hugged Jackie back and held her face gently. “Okay sweetie, I would give you a little peck on the cheek but I’ve got a little bit of a cold. I’ll be fine though. You have fun.”
“I will. See you dad!” Jackie let go and patted Ray’s shoulder before saluting and walking out of the house, grabbing her keys and closing the door. As she locked the door, she heard a plane go past above her. She rolled her eyes, walking from the house and down the street where she saw the skyline of the city she lived in. She could see the different buildings near the centre, her school that had a huge dome that resembled a building in the horizon distance with the same looking dome. That further dome building was where her uncle worked most of the time. His name was Danny. He worked for NASA but got somehow promoted because he found out how to make the constellations in the sky sentient. No one, not even him knows how. Jackie smiled seeing the city as she skipped down the hill. She then found herself at a destiny path heading into the woods. She turned and walked down that path. After a while of walking, she found herself at the foster home. She walked to the door and quietly slid in, closing the door behind her. She went over to the desk and no one was there. She wasn’t surprised though. She signed her name in and reached over the desk to grab a visitor badge. She put it on her waist, adjusting it. “Right. That’s done.” She walked away from the desk and down the hallway where she saw in another room a couple of small kids in a circle holding fingers up. “Must be playing Never Have I Ever. Wonder what they’re saying?” Jackie muttered, opening the door a peek.
“Neveeer have I eveerrrr… not flushed the toilet!” One of the kids said, some of the kids putting their fingers down and others laughing. This made Jackie smile, closing the door again and walking up the stairs. She got to the second floor, finding herself with random doors. One had ribbon wrapped around it, one had magazine pages glued on like collage and one had surfboard stickers. “Who should I say hi first to?”
A head popped up from another door further down a hallway to Jackie’s left. “Pssst, Jackie! They’re trying to find me! Save me!”
Jackie turned her head to see one of her friends and she giggled, running down the hallway and into the room. “What hell have you casted apon on the others Aurora?” Jackie asked, still giggling. “It’s not my fault if I haven’t showered yet! Also if you’re wondering the staff went out for lunch. That’s why Miss Robertson isn’t at the desk.”
“Ah. Did Ani let you know about what I said?”
“Not yet, what is it?”
“I’m sorta not in the mood for the party tomorrow so I asked Ani if she could let you guys know my question for the chill up the stairs in my the room.”
“Why the yes I would the like to.” Aurora snapped her fingers, walking over to her nest-like bed and grabbed a plush that was in the shape of an anthro deer. “I’m glad you’re here though, that way I have a break from outrunning them.”
“I brought blankets in case we didn’t have enough.”
“We do, but I don’t mind having more.” Aurora giggled, zipping up her onesie. “Please carry me to the theatre room please.” Jackie reached her arms out for Aurora to carry her on her back. Aurora crouched down and let Jackie climb on. “By the way, how’s the student council vote going?”
“Like ass. The group’s been trying to get people to vote for me but it’s only because of sabotage.”
“Yeah, and not to mention Atticus hates your guts. He would do anything to get you booted.”
“From the school?”
“I meant from the council but yeah. I don’t get why he hates you so much.” They ran past someone who froze in shock. “Sorry Ruth!”
“I don’t either. I mean unless he’s secretly a music connoisseur or something, it just seems petty.”
“Maybe he’s jealous that you have 6 cool aunts.”
“They’re not my actual aunts Aura, but they are cool. It can’t be that either.”
“Maybe it is just petty.”
“Oh well.”
The both of them got to the theatre room where they saw three others sitting down at the front on the floor with their own blankets and pillows. They also had snacks and one of them had a sewing machine next to their set of pillows and blankets. Their names were Aniran, Cascade and Ivy.
“Fuck.”
“It’s fine, I'll be your lawyer.” Jackie got off from Aurora’s back and tip-toed down the stairs. “I’ve arrived, heathens.” She remarked sliding down next to them. “Jackie!” Aniran exclaimed, leaning over to give her a hug. Jackie reciprocated as Aurora walked down the stairs. “The true heathen!” Cascade pointed and gasped. “Bitch.”
“It’s fine Aurora, do you still have your fursuit thing?” Ivy asked, winding up the thread on her sewing machine. “Yeah, why?”
“I don’t need to make an outfit for you anymore since we’re gonna be chilling in Jackie’s room for the party. But it doesn’t mean you’re out of my grasp.”
“Duely noted.” Aurora chuckled, rolling up next to them on the floor. “Did you hear about the client Karsyn had?” Cascade started. “I did, yeah. Icessa was telling me on the phone. I’m surprised she had the patience.”
“Knowing them, might be their new song. Oh also I wanna ask, are they coming to the party tomorrow?”
“No. Ossia’s got her classes, Karsyn’s got a modelling thing, Chae-Young’s helping with the modelling thing, Icessa’s been hired for a party coz of her reading, Jynica’s got her own party she’s going to and Toshani has her stuff. But she did say she’ll try and pay a visit.”
“Ah, that’s nice of her.”
“I know, but one of us is burying the lead. What movie are we watching tonight, Ani?” Jackie asked, laying on her stomach and looking over to Aniran. “Well we’ve got choices. Decisions, decisions. Now are we in a joy and dark mood or a history mood. I found some old dvds, one of them ‘How To Be A Serial Killer’ and the other didn’t have a name of it but some of the other kids said it was the Community movie?” This made Jackie gasp when she heard that. “Where’s the DVD?”
“Here.” Aniran passed the blank case to Jackie as she opened it and swung her legs back and forth. “I have been needing this. Thank you so much Ani.”
Aniran giggled and grabbed some DVD sets next to her and laid them out. “ABBA and Batman? Or Barbie and atomic warfare?”
“I’m feeling some Greek justice.”
“Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight it is!” Aniran got up and ran up the stairs heading to the projector, opening it and placing it in the projector before closing it and speeding back down to the front between Ivy and Cascade. The screen turned blue before Cascade pulled up a remote from the side of her and pressed to the side. “Now which one first? ‘You can dance, you can shine’ or ‘You wanna know how I got these scars?”
“Ughhhhh, Sophie’s choiiice.” Aurora groaned. “Hospital Demolition or Triple Dad wedding? SO HARD TO CHOOSE-“
“I want some cheesiness after last week so Mamma Mia.” Jackie suggested. “All in favour of Mamma Mia first, say aye.”
“Aye!”
“Aye.”
“Ayeeeeeee-“
“Okay, Mamma Mia!” Cascade flicked to the option that said Mamma Mia and pressed play. “Can you put on subtitles?” Aurora asked. “Yeah.” Cascade pressed another button and the sign for subtitles showed up.
