It all started in 1939, when World War 2 started with the Germans invading Poland, Ivar Bondevik, a Norwegian writer, returned to his country hours after the attack, where he returned wounded by one of the bombs, which had hit a few blocks from where he was.
The thing went to worse when the Germans invaded Norway the 9th of April of 1940. Ivar was sended to Birkenau (Auschwitz) two days after that because one of the neighbors told the Nazis he was Homosexual.
He had the luck that one of his "friends" was in the army, convincing Hitler, the German Führer, that he wasn't Homo, that it was just a joke of that neighbor, making fun of him because their relationship wasn't good.
At the end, Hitler seem to have a little of compassion and let Ivar go, with the condition that Gilbert looked after him all the time.
While he was in the Camp, he thought of the idea to rewrite the History, making it easier for children to learn about it.

At that time it was better to commit suicide, it was really tiring and boring to stand at the cold Polish winter, waiting for the precarious food that they offered.

—Here—It was all he said, capturing Gilbert's attention for a few seconds before he continued his work
He never imagined that Ivar was in that kind of place...
