RETURN OF THE DARKNESS
Chapter 1: SANCTIFICATION
Elden, once a universe of perfect balance woven from four primordial elements—Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth—was shattered by greed. A faction, craving absolute perfection, seized power beyond their destiny, declared themselves the undeniable truth, and renamed the world "The Holy Land of Annora." They became the Faction of Light, their cruel dogma erasing history, forbidding ancient rituals, and branding any difference an "impurity" to be purified through systematic slaughter and cruel experiments.
The air in a small border settlement hung thick with the smell of charred embers and congealed blood. Black smoke smeared the sky, a grim testament to the "sanctification" just enacted by golden-armored troops. Behind smoldering rubble, two figures tried to blend into the shadows: Luna and her young daughter, Lucy.
A throbbing pain pulsed in Luna’s forehead where her demon horns, the pride of her Fire Demon race, had been. She had ripped them off in a desperate attempt to hide their identity. Their red hair, like dying flames, was matted with dust. Lucy’s eyes, red from smoke and fear, streamed tears that cut clean trails on her dirty cheeks.
"Shhh... sweetie, don't make a sound," Luna whispered hoarsely, patting Lucy's back. "Close your eyes. Listen to Mommy's heartbeat. Think of it like a game."
"But, Mommy... it stings..." Lucy whimpered.
"I know. Try to be strong. For Mommy."
The sounds of iron boots and shouted commands echoed around them. The troops were conducting a final sweep. Suddenly, a gauntleted hand brushed aside their hiding place. CRASSSHHH!!
Sunlight, filtered through smoke, dazzled them. A cold-faced soldier stared down, a thin smile behind his visor. "Got them! Two leftover rats! Brutal, they even cut the horns off!" He roughly grabbed Luna's hair and Lucy's arm, dragging them to a field stained with dark patches.
They were forced to their knees. A circle of soldiers closed in, their hollow stares pitiless.
"Mommy… I'm scared," Lucy cried, burying her face in Luna's lap.
"Hold on tight. Close your eyes. Don't look. Everything will... be alright," Luna whispered, hiding her despair behind a bitter smile. She knew it was the end.
All sound ceased. The soldiers straightened. A figure stepped forward. Tall, majestic, with flowing blonde hair and gleaming golden armor. His face was angelically handsome but cold. A soldier whispered with reverence, "Leones... The Emissary."
Leones's golden eyes swept over them with absolute emptiness. "O seeds of disgrace. Defilers of the world. Your polluted blood has defiled this holy ground. Only through purification by the grand light of Annora can this land be sanctified again."
Without emotion, he raised a white-gloved hand. A spear of pure light materialized, humming with destructive energy. A faint, sadistic smile touched his lips.
"BE GONE, IN THE NAME OF PURIFICATION, FOR THE MOST HOLY GODDESS ANNORA!" he shouted.
The spear swung with lethal precision. Luna closed her eyes, clutching Lucy, a scream choking in their throats.
"NOOO—!"
KRRRAAASSSHHHHHH!!!!!
A deafening sound of metal on metal, not flesh. Silence fell.
Leones stood rigid, his smile gone. Behind him, the troops fell silent. At the tip of his holy spear stood a man.
He appeared to be in his forties, with hair white as snow. But his eyes held glowing purple eclipse-shaped pupils set in a sclera blacker than the netherworld. His faint smile revealed sharp, irregular teeth. His body was shrouded in living darkness. He had stopped the spear with the tip of his index finger.
"Still," the man said, his voice deep and flat, "far from enough."
He pressed down with his finger. KRAAAANGGG!!! The spear of light shattered into fading fragments.
Soldiers shouted in fear. "HUHHH?!?! W.. WHAT IS THAT, WHO IS THAT??"
The man sighed, disappointed. "Hmmm. Still not enough."
The insult burned Leones's pride. Light energy gathered in his hand, forming a glowing battle axe. "HOW DAREEEE YOU!!!!" he roared, slamming the axe down in a relentless barrage.
Clang! Clang! Clang! Each blow was blocked or absorbed by the man's dark shroud, which rippled softly like thick fluid.
Panting, sweat-soaked, Leones stared at his fading weapon. The man raised an eyebrow. "Done?"
Leones spat blood. His strategic mind screamed: the power difference was vast. Only a forbidden technique might work. He jumped back, drawing energy from the relics on his robe and even the weakened soldiers around him. His veins burned with the strain.
"UURRRKKK!! Vanish!!! ANNORA'S MERCY LIGHT BURST!!!!"
A giant laser-like beam of wrathful red light erupted—raw, unstoppable energy scorching the ground towards the man, Luna, and Lucy.
The man didn't move. He raised his index finger again. "Red light, huh? Not bad. Rare to see Light forced into wrath," he observed, like a scientist. "But, why do you all always have to shout the name of your technique? So strange. Doesn't true power speak for itself?"
He glanced back at Luna and Lucy. "You two, demons behind me. This is what happens when one doesn't understand the fundamental gap between Elemental Principles. They force their will, forget nature's laws. They pursue light, but forget that light too dazzling only produces blindness."
The red beam reached his face. He simply pushed his fingertip forward, touching the center of the energy wave.
SHUUUUTTTTT!!! The sound of air being sucked into a vacuum. The entire beam was swallowed by his fingertip without a trace.
The man clicked his tongue. "Pathetic."
Leones fell to his knees, armor cracked and smoking. His mind was devastated. "No... no... NOOO!! WHAT NONSENSE IS THIS!!!" he shouted, his voice breaking.
The man looked at him with slight pity. "You know," he said, his voice suddenly old and wise, "in every life with different principles, there is balance. Every element has its opposite. You wield 'Light'. I represent 'Dark'. In an equal fight, I should be weak against you. Light should dispel darkness."
He took a step closer. "But that only applies if your Light is comparable to my Dark. Your Light... is small. Very small. And..."
The sky above changed. It turned deep purple. Clouds swirled into a terrifying vortex. Giant tendrils of pure, dense darkness reached down, encircling the area. The sun was covered by a total eclipse, the moon glowing purple, emitting a pulsating black light. Behind it, a vast cosmic silhouette formed—a shadow of pulsating darkness with countless sharp, moving fangs and hundreds of purple eyes opening to look down.
The man on the ground raised his hand. The entity's maw moved in unison. His voice echoed from everywhere, shaking souls.
"Very... Weak...."
Leones screamed, denying reality. "N..NONSENSE!!!!! SUCH A THING CAN'T EXIST!! It's an illusion! I AM LEONES!! THE CHOSEN ONE!!" His cry was a whimper against the cosmic vastness.
The man clenched his fist slowly. The vortex spun faster. Hundreds of sharper tendrils shot down, each targeting a petrified soldier.
Leones watched, his holy energy dying. "I CAN'T... CAN'T POSSIBLY LOSE..." he whispered, tears streaming. He fell to his knees, broken.
The man looked at him without hatred. "Farewell," he said flatly.
He slammed his fist down.
ZRAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT….
The sound of massive, simultaneous penetration. Tendrils pierced every soldier's skull. Silence followed, heavy and unbearable.
Luna froze. Every soldier stood rigid, a dark tendril embedded in their head. Blood dripped quietly. A neat, efficient extermination.
A groan. Leones. A tendril was in his shoulder, another in his chest. He gurgled blood. "Impossible... You... true darkness..." he hissed.
The man approached. "Noisy," he said.
Another tendril shot down. Crack! It pierced between Leones's eyes. The light in his eyes died. His body fell lifeless.
The sight was too much for Luna. She fainted.
"M.. Mommy?! Mommy!" Lucy shook her mother. "Wake up! Don't leave me!"
The man stood behind her, his shadow enveloping her. "Your mother is fine, little demon. Just tired. I've finished them all off. Now, the question is: what will you do? Run? Fight me? Or return to a false peace that will be destroyed again? I merely happened to descend here. Your fate is not my concern."
Lucy turned. Her fear was swept away by something else. Her eyes, green or amber, burned with steely resolve, a dangerous ambition. She saw absolute power and desired it. *I want to be like that.*
The man fell silent. That gaze... disturbed him. It reminded him of a "younger sibling" from long ago. A nearly forgotten emotion stirred.
"Wow," he said, a faint smile of genuine surprise. "If looks could kill, maybe I could finally taste death. Heheheh."
Lucy's voice was faint but intense. "I... want... to be strong.."
"Strong?" he repeated.
She looked at her mother, then back at him, her gaze burning brighter. "I waaaaant… TO BECOME…... I WANT TO BECOME YOUR DISCIPLE!!!!!"
Silence.
The man looked genuinely surprised. "Hah???"
Lucy's gaze didn't waver. "I WANT TO BE YOUR DISCIPLE AND GET STRONGER!! TEACH ME TO SUMMON THOSE THORNS FROM THE SKY!"
"Thorns?" he mused, amused. "Is that what you call them?"
"YES, THOSE! I WANT TO BE STRONG LIKE THAT! I WANT TO PROTECT MY FAMILY!! I DON'T WANT TO RUN ANYMORE!" she shouted, tears of determination flowing.
The man fell silent. Logically, it made no sense. He was Balance, not a babysitter. Yet, a strange care, an empathy, emerged. A desire to see how far her ambition could endure his darkness. An experiment.
"Heh," he murmured. "Heheheh. A disciple, huh?" He stood straighter, his aura shifting to that of a Teacher.
"Very well. I shall grant your wish, little demon. But remember, once you step into my territory, your life will become agony. Death or madness would be a better fate than my training."
He looked at the fading sky. "For I am the beginning of all things good and evil. I am whom you see when you first open your eyes and when you close them for the last time. I am who accompanies your nightmares. I am who existed before existence, and I am who will remain after everything is gone."
He stared into Lucy's determined eyes, his voice resonating in her soul. "I am the Reaper Tenebra... I am DARKNESS itself."
Before that living darkness, the little girl with hair of fire and eyes of steel nodded, accepting her new destiny.
