As I walked into the kitchen dressed for tonight’s dinner, the rice cooker chimed and sang alerting me that it was finished cooking. I opened the lid of the Dutch Oven on the counter. The smell of the beef stew rose up and hugged my nose. Excellent, the stew is still at a perfect temperature. Placing the lid back on the Dutch Oven. I walked over to the oven, pulled out the garlic bread, and placed it on top of the stove to cool. Turning off the oven, I placed the mittens and leaned on the counter. I looked up at the time on the clock in front of me.
They’ll be here in 5 minutes. Sophia, I wonder if I did right by our boy. It’s been almost 10 years since my lovely wife passed. Silvestre was 19 when it happened, so he took it pretty hard. It was traumatic for me because we’d been together since middle school. But I couldn't let my emotions take over. I needed to keep the ship in motion. I could feel sorry for myself when I reached my destination.
To this day I don’t know how I did it, but I was somehow able to guide and mentor Silvestre while he was in his undergrad and he eventually went on to an Ivy league law school, just like his father. However, instead of becoming a divorce lawyer like his old man, he chose to be a corporate lawyer. I can’t imagine why he would live such a boring life.
The one area I was always terrible at finding a girlfriend. Every girl he dated in middle school and high school broke his heart. I can’t even recall him ever having a steady girlfriend for longer than 2 months. I just hope this one isn’t like the others.
There was a knock at the door. When I opened the door, standing there was my boy, Silvestre. “Welcome home, kiddo,” I said, giving him a hug.
“Hey dad, what’s up with all the cologne is your paralegal here?” Silvestre chuckled as he pulled away.
“Of course, not you know I don’t date my paralegal’s, but I will tell Charlotte you said hi.”
“Oh, is this the new girl here? Since mom passed, you always have some pretty young thang with you.” Silvestre said looking behind me.
“No, Ada is not here; she is with her friends. It's just going to be us tonight,” I said, then waved my hand in the air. “We can talk about me later. Where is this new girlfriend?”
“Oh, she should be coming up.” Silvestre said he then turned around and shouted, “Babe, is everything okay?”
Turning around the corner of the garage was a tall woman with silky white hair. Her skin was as white as porcelain, without a blemish in sight. Around her wrist were golden bangles, and she wore a few rings on her fingers. But what stood out the most were her tattoos and those eyes. On her neck there was a black tattoo of arrows pointing down. On her face were golden runes of some kind of ancient origin. Her eyes looked to be made of molten gold that shined so brightly I couldn’t find her pupils.
Holy Fuck! This woman is gorgeous.
Keeping my poker face, I extended my hand. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Raymond Aparecido.”
“Hi, my name is Calliope, the angel of beautiful destruction,” Calliope said, shaking my hand. Her hand was as cold as ice.
Putting my hand in my pocket for warmth, I said, “The angel of beautiful destruction. That’s a cute nickname you have for yourself” It’s actually really weird.
“It’s not a nickname, that’s my epithet” Calliope said with her head tilted to the side and an eyebrow raised.
“What do you mean?” I said.
“Dad, she’s divine they don’t have last names. They only have epithets. Like Poseidon, the god of the sea, or Thor, the god of thunder.” Silvestre said. He looked over to Calliope. “I’m sorry, babe. I should have told him before we got here.”
Calliope eyes grew wide “No no that’s my mistake! I’ve gotten so comfortable around you I forget to switch to my mortal form.” Calliope said. The runes on her face started to fade, her eyes dimed so that I could see her pupils now surrounded by a golden iris. Her skin even got some color as she started to get more tan. “There that should clear things up!”
“Ah, I apologize for my rudeness, it must be cold. Come on in. Here I’ll take you to the dining room.” I said closing the door as they walked in.
Fuck! This woman is going to break his heart!
Sophia, I really could use your help right now!
