Caroline Wintersmith, a student at Norlocke Academy, has become used to very little happening in regards to the weather. There's very little sun, very few storms, and really only clouds, light rain, and the occasional blizzard. Which is why, when she overhears a conversation between the school's headmaster and the guardian of a transferring student, her curiosity is immediately piqued. Why would anyone try to extract a promise in regards to the weather, especially when there were never any storms at Norlocke anyway? And how does this connect to the new student, Glass Farthingdale?

Her search for answers leads Caroline in directions that she never would've guessed, and threatens to be much more dangerous than she could've imagined. She thought her hardest task would be trying to talk to the prickly new student, but that turns out to be the least of her problems. Strange grey men are lurking around outside the school, storms that only increase in violence sweep across the land, and the line between fact and fiction seems to be fading. With her own life now at stake, and no one who will take her suspicions seriously, Caroline will have to use all her wits, and break more rules than she ever has before, to decipher the mystery surrounding Glass Farthingdale before it's too late.
