Makoto Tano had always loved video games, and over time, he had started to teach his older sister Miku to play them as well. Though still learning, Miku had started to share her brother's love of the digital world, so when the announcement came for the newest VRMMORPG Sword Art Online, the two knew they had to get a copy. When Miku's copy failed to come in however, the two decided to take turns with Makoto's copy instead. As Miku put on her brother's nervegear, neither of them realized the deathgame that had started.

Now, a year after the launch, Makoto has tried everything he could think of to rescue his sister. Finally, as an act of desperation, he posted an open letter to Kayaba, begging for his sister's missing copy of the game so that he could at least fight with her no matter the cost. Much to his surprise, Kayaba honored this deal, sending Makoto a package containing a brand new nervegear and copy of the game.

Now Makoto has entered the floating castle of Aincrad a year late to the party. He must grind levels and thoroughly explore floors searching for his lost sister. Without a location or in game name, he has a long search before him.
