THE SECRET ADMIRER

Chapter One: Ready to Love

Chapter One: Ready to Love

Aug 22, 2025

Amanda sat by the wide window of her bungalow, watching the evening sky as it melted into vibrant shades of orange, pink, and deep purple. The fading sunlight spilled across the glass, reflecting her face back at her, a quiet reminder of the life she had built with her own hands. At only twenty, she had what many women twice her age still dreamed of: a stylish yet modest home standing proudly on her own land, a Camry glinting in the driveway, and a secure position in one of the country’s leading oil companies.

Success had come early, but tonight, Amanda realized something deeper was missing.

She hugged herself gently, a confident smile curving her lips as she whispered, “I’ve worked hard for three years. I’ve built my own life. Now… I am ready for marriage.”

The words tasted strange but beautiful. Marriage. Love. Concepts she had pushed aside while chasing her ambitions. At the office, she laughed whenever colleagues teased each other about boyfriends and wedding rings, but beneath her laughter was a quiet emptiness. She had turned away admirers with polite smiles and cool refusals, never letting anyone close enough to touch her heart.

Now she wondered if she had been too quick to shut them all out?

Her thoughts returned to a moment just days ago in the office cafeteria. She had paused mid-bite, her spoon suspended as her eyes caught a couple at the far table. They weren’t extraordinary, just two young people sharing a meal. Yet their shoulders brushed as they laughed together, their hands found excuses to linger in each other’s grasp, and their eyes shone with unspoken affection. Amanda had looked away, but not before something sharp twisted inside her, not jealousy, but loneliness.

Despite her success, Amanda’s world was incomplete. Friends at work, church acquaintances, and cheerful neighbors filled her days, but not her heart. Her wealth could buy comfort, but it could not buy companionship. For the first time, she admitted what she had long ignored: she wanted someone to love, someone who truly knew her.

But Amanda was no fool. She would not fall for empty flattery or shallow charm. She wanted a man strong enough to walk beside her, patient enough to break through her defenses, and tender enough to cherish the woman beyond the polished surface.

A daring idea crept into her mind. What if she tested them? What if she acted distant, unkind, even challenging? The men who were only drawn to her beauty or wealth would fade quickly. But the one who remained, the man persistent enough to endure, would be worthy.

Her lips curved in mischief as she imagined the game. Tomorrow would be another chance to work, to smile, to live, and perhaps, to test fate itself.

Yet as she turned from the window, a strange shiver rippled through her. The night air seemed to whisper promises she could not understand. Somewhere nearby, someone’s gaze lingered on her, a heartbeat quickening whenever she appeared. Fate was already weaving its story.

The following evening, Amanda’s test began sooner than she imagined. On her way home from work, her Camry coughed and sputtered before breaking down on the roadside. With calm determination, she pulled over, stepped out, and inspected the car, though she knew nothing about repairs. To make matters worse, her phone had died, leaving her stranded without help.

She closed her eyes briefly, steadying her nerves. I can’t just stand here; I need a plan, she thought. But before she could act, a sleek black GLE pulled up across from her.

From it stepped a tall, dark-skinned man, striking in appearance, his movements confident yet graceful. Amanda’s heart gave a quick, uninvited flutter. Wow… he’s incredibly attractive, she admitted silently before straightening her shoulders, masking her thoughts with composure.

“Hello, young lady,” the man greeted warmly, his voice rich and steady. “How are you?”

“I’m well, thank you. And you?” she replied smoothly, her tone calm and self-assured.

“I’m good, thanks to the Almighty.” His eyes held genuine concern. “But what brings you here alone?”

Amanda exhaled softly, her honesty disarming. “My car broke down, and my phone died. I haven’t been able to call my mechanic.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” he said kindly. “If you don’t mind, I can take a look. It might be a simple fix.”

Something in his tone eased her worries. She nodded, stepping aside. He bent over the engine with quiet focus, then straightened with a playful smile. “Try giving it a small kick just here. Let’s see what happens.”

Amused but willing, Amanda followed his instruction. To her surprise, the engine roared back to life. She laughed, relief flooding through her as tension drained away.

“There you go,” he said, smiling. “Sometimes, all it takes is a nudge.”

Amanda shook her head in disbelief, still laughing. “You’ve just saved me from a long, frustrating night. Thank you.”

He nodded modestly. “No problem at all. Please take my card. If anything else happens, you can call me.”

She accepted the card, her smile genuine. “Absolutely. I truly appreciate this.”

As they both drove away, Amanda couldn’t help but steal a glance in her mirror, her heart racing with something unfamiliar. What she didn’t know was that the man was no stranger; he was her neighbor from Greenline Estate. For months, he had admired her from afar, enchanted by her strength and grace, but tonight fate had finally given him an opening.

When Amanda reached her gate, the guard greeted cheerfully, “Welcome, ma’am! How was work today?”

“Fantastic, thank you,” she answered, though her voice carried an excitement that had little to do with work. She hurried inside, eager to charge her phone and call the man who had so effortlessly brightened her evening.

Later, with her phone buzzing back to life, she dialed the number on the card. After a few rings, a deep voice answered, “Hello, who is on the line?”

“It’s Amanda, the lady you helped with her car earlier.” Her smile carried through her voice.

“Oh, Amanda! How are you?”

“I’m doing great. Thanks again for today, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. By the way, I never caught your name.”

“My apologies,” he said, a trace of shyness in his confident tone. “I’m Richard. And you?”

“Amanda,” she replied warmly. “Nice to officially meet you, Richard.”

Their conversation flowed effortlessly, words bridging the gap between strangers and something more. They laughed lightly, their tones softening as minutes passed. Before hanging up, Richard asked, “Is this your WhatsApp number?”

“Yes, it is,” she said, her heart racing with curiosity.

“Perfect. I’ll text you. Have a wonderful evening, Amanda.”

“You too,” she whispered, though her voice carried a smile.

As she set her phone down, Amanda felt a spark in her chest, a blend of hope and anticipation. Something within her whispered that this was not  a chance, but the beginning.
