In the lands to the north, they used to speak of wraiths; tall and feathered with eyes framed by long tendrils, who’d walk the earth each night with a lantern in hand to harvest the souls of the dead. Now their stories have passed into legend, but there are some who still remember, and some who covet the power of the unearthly light they wield.
In the present day, two kingdoms convene to instigate a rocky alliance in the wake of the death of King Ekkehard, a brutal conqueror who swept both nations into a decades-long conflict. Ekkehard’s bastard Danny will do anything to see his brother Leon’s rise to the throne succeed. When Danny’s network of spies uncover a plot to supersede Leon’s authority, he must escape the palace to warn the king of the danger. However, Danny’s mission is complicated by the discovery of a strange creature, wounded and locked away in the palace’s underground prison.
Meanwhile in the kingdom to the south, Princess Penelope receives news that her brother Cyrus, the heir, has been caught in a deadly landslide and needs immediate aid. But before she can set out to rescue him she makes her own discovery in an abandoned tower above her sleeping quarters.
Danny and Penelope must now set out on a journey to reach the border between the two nations. But strange happenings seem to plague them at every turn as if nature itself is being corrupted.Read more
