A maqamat/maqamah is a form of Arabic literary prose, usually recited aloud before a standing audience. While the language in it is complex, the topics are often mundane, usually about roguish hijinx. This comic is adapted from "The Maqamat of Baghdad," written in the 11th century, during the Abbasid Empire.
